Bank of America No Longer Accepting Applications For Better Balance Rewards Card

At the start of May we shared a rumor stating that Bank of America would be discontinuing the Better Balance Rewards card. It seems like this rumor is now a reality as when you visit the previous page for the Better Balance Rewards card you’re instead redirected to the generic Bank of America credit card page.

There is also a new card listed called simply “Bankamericard” that offers low interest, 0% APY for first 15 months and also access to a free FICO score. Basically a copy of the Chase Slate card as also rumored. It’s unclear what will happen to existing cardholders at the moment, I’ve reached out to Bank of America for comment and will update the post if they reply.

Are people going to product swap this card to something else? I saw below the recommendation for the Custom Cash Reward card. Any other options to consider?

Will BofA let us product switch now or do we need to wait for the conversion to Unlimited Cash Reward and THEN do the product swap to Custom Reward card (or something else)?

Does anyone know if the $20 bonus will coincide with our current expected quarterly bonus?

I just got this in the mail today from Bank of America:

“We want to let you know that your Better Balance Rewards credit card will become a Bank of America Unlimited Cash Rewards Visa Signature credit card because the Better Balance Rewards program is being discontinued.”

“Your last Better Balance Rewards Quarterly Cash Reward will be paid in April; however, if your account is open and you continue to make qualifying payments from April 1 through May 15 [2023], we will reward you with a one-time statement credit of $20.”

Not sure if this is just for me or if everyone’s Better Balance Card will get converted to an Unlimited Cash Rewards Visa Signature credit card?

Hmm, following. I haven’t gotten any notice on my BBR card yet.

Also received the same letter. I just called the customer service to request an immediate conversion to the more useful Customized Cash Rewards card. Not interested in the additional $20×2 bonus.

Did they let you do the product swap?

Do you know if they would let you do that swap going from the Unlimited Cash Reward card to the Custom Cash Rewards card instead?

I might just want to wait for the $20 to post as it’s x3, (and plus any current quarter bonus?) not sure.

Yes, the CSR told me the PC request was submitted. I guess it should get approved early next week. Right now, the BofA portal is still showing the BBR card. Since it is a MC -> Visa change, I also asked the CSR if the credit card history will be kept after the card number change, and I was told yes.

Not sure about UCR -> CCR. Maybe as easy as BBR -> CCR.

I got the same letter. Alas, all good things must come to an end. I had a good 10 year run though. I’m not sure I want an Unlimited Cash Rewards card, but may consider seeing if I can change it to another Customized Cash Rewards card after the $20 one time statement credit hits.

The card will switch over on May 16, so doesn’t that mean you will be going BBR –> UCR –> Customized Cash Rewards?

Are product changes in that direction permitted?

Oh man, I just got this as well for all my BBR cards. Dang. Good run; I know I missed a few quarters, but otherwise, it was a nice card to get some cash back every quarter.

They are switching it to some other Unlimited Cash Rewards card which means at least I will get the preferred rewards bonus.

So, what’s the thinking as to how long these BBRs will last? Could it be that BBRs are actually profitable enough for BoA that they don’t bother about the “freeloaders”?

FWIW, I just got a replacement for an expiring BBR card, with new expiry in 2024, and it still says BBR. That doesn’t imply it will survive the nerf for another five years, but it also doesn’t look like they’re imminently cutting it either.

On the reddit post of the boa dump it lists several bbr app links. Funny thing is when you sign in to auto fill some of the app info it says this “Requirements to apply
Lending requirements include:

• 2 or more years in business
under existing ownership
• At least $100,000 in prior-year annual gross sales”

Link: https://applyonlinenow.com/USCCapp/Ctl/entry?sc=BAABYZ

From: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14AQytImfraEbJJOo_a7BOTgioX9mWF-KfhSakogv91Y/htmlview

Who knows if the apps will process.

This may be fairly obvious, but I call in just to give it a shot at a product change. [should have been more on the ball]

Denied as it was a card they are no longer offering.
