Found this online:

Just did a price comparison between Aldi and Costco. Nearly everything at Costco is more expensive by weight, and on top of that you have to buy 3-4x as much of it.

  • Bacon ($5/lb vs $3.99)
  • eggs (about 10-20c more per dozen)
  • chicken breasts ($3.50/lb vs $2.29) – my local Kroger actually sold chicken breast for $1.89 on the fresh butcher counter!
  • butter ($3.25/lb vs $2.35)

All more expensive than Aldi, heck some of it is more than Wegmans or Kroger. Sometimes a heavily discounted sale item was equivalent or slightly cheaper than Aldi would be at regular price, but that was it.

What am I missing, if none of the staples are cheaper here? Seems like I just paid $60 for higher prices in bigger quantities.

Other than the food court, hot dogs, and rotisserie chickens, everything costs more at Costco.

Toilet paper. Diapers. trash bags. dish soap. frozen strawberries, blueberries. chicken pot pies at 1.79 each (pack of 8 I think). toothpaste. laundry soap. gas alone pays for the membership and costco is on my way home everyday. batteries. shampoo. that’s just stuff I can think of within 30 seconds. their made to go meals like enchiladas and gyros and wraps and whatnot are great for a small family or large family gathering, won’t break the bank and taste great. Lots of reasons to belong to Costco and it saves our family a ton of money. We also shop at Aldi and yes some things are even cheaper there. Oh and produce is excellent quality at Costco and at Aldi it’s usually bad for a lot of the fruit and much more expensive at other grocery stores.

I bet if you checked the prices per unit, Costco is WAY MORE EXPENSIVE 100% of the time. They package in different sizes and packs so most people don’t bother to do the math. I have definitely done my calculation on per unit cost for toilet paper, trash bags, dish soap, toothpaste, and laundry detergent. Most of the time walmart has the lowest price, and occasionally amazon. I have actually done the math previously before i decide to cancel my Costco membership. Not just my “gut-feeling” that Costco is “cheaper”.

And funny you mentioned blueberries. I just discovered my local Sam’s blueberries is half the price than Costco. I cut my daily banana blueberries shake prices in half. Kudos to you if you want to continue to line the pocket of Costco’s executives.

comparing aldi and costco as if they’re the same quality is crazy

Boycotting Costco (like Target) after being a member of 20 years until they stop their price gouging practice. A 10-pack of Kleenex costs $24.99 at Costco, but it’s only $14.99 at my local Sam’s Club. Even after accounting for the difference in sheets per box, Costco is charging $8 more than Sam’s for the same product. Just one ‘price gouging’ purchase can make up the $20 discount. Literally I was tracking my expense last month and my groceries category went down by $250 dollars by not going to Costco. The new CFO (from Kroger) is deploying the same playbook from Kroger.

Are you looking online or something? Costco upcharges online, especially when the item is available in the warehouse.

10-pack of Kleenex in store at my Costco is $18.99 (230 count), 12-pack at Sam’s is $17.94 (160 count).

JasonTX
JasonTX (@guest_1924630)

12-pack at Sam’s is $14.44 (160 count) – warehouse price from yesterday. Sam’s online is $17.94. Costco warehouse is $18.99 (230 count 10 pack), online $24.99. That comes to 0.00825652173 per sheet at Costco and 0.00752083333 per sheet at Sam’s. So you overpaid $2 dollar at Costco.

$2 per item and if you purchase 10 items a week, that’s $20 a week. As a loyal member of 20 years, i overpaid $20k of the 1040 weeks I have been scammed by Costco.

If I put the $20/week overpaid to the Costco Slum-Grocer into VOO, that would have returned me close to $50k now. So my real opportunity cost to shop at a price-gouging grocery store like Costco is $50k!!!!

Absolutely over with them. Plus many of the items are overpriced by more than $2/item. Apples, Kiwi, Oranges are all selling at outrageous prices at Costco. The Kroger/Costco CFO is nothing by corporate greed.

Your prerogative is to shop where you want, absolutely. My point was that your first post was misleading saying it was $8.

For me, it comes down to where you shop. I find the quality of certain things better at Costco that are the same price as Sam’s. To avoid having to travel across town to a second store, I’d pay the extra couple bucks for a couple items. But that’s my choice and we all have plenty of choices.

It was not really mis-leading though. $24.99 and $14.99 is $10 dollar difference and because of the size difference (brands purposedly sold different packs/sizes combos at different retailers so there is no quick way for consumers to determine what is cheaper. So I just did a quick mental-math (albeit off). People think $0.007 and $0.008 doesn’t make a difference, but that’s 10% more expensive at Costso than Sam’s. And look at the kiwi prices, it’s close to 100% more expensive ($6.59 vs $11.99) – same brand, same size gold kiwi. This is just one example. Look at everything that costco sells. It costs way more. If you want to line the pocket of the Kroger/Costco executives. Good for you!

Misleading because you were using the online delivery price for Costco and not for Sam’s.

Again, shop where you want, I don’t care. Why you seem to feel the need for others to do the same as you, I do not know.

it’s a matter of letting people know they are overpaying 10% to 50% per item at Costco. The way they package the same product in different sizes and units make it almost impossible to quickly compare prices. It’s part of Costco’s strategy to overcharge without people realizing it. I am just exposing what they are doing. I have been scammed for over 20 years. Enough already

Having a Costco membership does not mean buying everything they sell without checking the prices. Kleenex is one of the items frequently on sale, so don’t bother when it’s not on sale.

Why would I need to hunt for bargain when Sam’s club sells you the same product at a better price at all time without “on sale”? Why do I want to create more work for myself?

Got this again yesterday on the same card as two weeks ago. A $65 shop card from the membership desk worked, so I’ll try it again.

Take this for what it’s worth. I asked to purchase multiple Shop Cards and was directed to the area past the self-checkout registers. They loaded the $65 to the cards but I noticed that there was a value handwritten on one of the cards and I asked if these were reused cards. The manager checked the history of each card and all were used before – that means that the previous holder could have the account number and pin in their possession. I explained the risk and the manager agreed and went to the back to get “new cards” directly from the box. I don’t know if there is a real risk to their policy of reusing Shop Cards by reloading them but I know that the risk exists. Just food for thought for those buying $65 Shop Cards at the store.

That’s a good DP, thank you. Never would have considered that.

I’ve so far done 5 of these offers across P1 and P2’s credit cards. Just noticed I now have on my two checking debit cards. Guess another trip to Costco is on tap.

how come no one talks about the price gouging practice at Costco? I am a loyal member of over 20 years and just had enough. 2lb Gold kiwi sold for $11.99 at Costco, and the same brand at Sam’s Club sold for $6.59. I started going to sam’s club earlier this year and instead of spending $100 at Costco every weekend, my grocery bills dropped to $60. And it’s not only grocery, Costco price gouging on toilet paper, kleenex, and pretty much everything else. I don’t understand why anyone wants to spend extra 30% on everything when you can get it cheaper at Sam’s or Walmart.

Because Costco is a cult like Tesla and Apple :). To be fair, some prices in Costco are the same as in Sam’s.
On another note, I had to contact Chase to get the $20 credit in combination with last month’s groupon costco offer.

Last month, I received $20 out of $60 and used it to renew my membership. Last week, I noticed $20 out of $65 and used it to upgrade to an Executive membership. I called 1-800-774-2678. My CC statement shows *Membership*.

Has anyone tried purchasing something that’s +$65 online and gotten the credit? Obviously I would try it in store but the offer is only available on my freedom flex card which of course happens to be a MC, also shop cards online are only available in $25 increments

I don’t see why it wouldn’t work if the purchase is exactly $65 or $130. All online purchases (including memberships) code exactly the same on my cc statements.

You can also purchase a Gift of Membership on costco website (Search for item 970). It can be used to renew a membership at any time.

Made the purchase on 9/28. Didn’t get processed until 10/2 so SOL for this deal. Should have gone into the B&M to get the membership renewed given all the horrible stories of lost membership gift cards, no tracking number, and obsolete gift cards that were supposedly new. What a sh!t show.
