[Now Live] Bank of America Updating Their Bill Payment System On August 23rd

(Reposting 9/2/25 as a reminder to update this if you haven’t already.)

On August 23, 2025, Bank of America is updating their bill payment system. Payments and auto-pay set up to pay a BofA card via the old Bill Pay system will be cancelled.

Apparently, BofA has a convoluted way to set up auto-pay to pay their own credit cards, and it must be done through a separate Bill Pay system instead of directly. After August 23rd, hopefully the system will be streamlined for ease of use.

Important note: any payments or auto-pays set up within the current system for August 23rd and beyond will be cancelled.

As far as I understand: This only affects payments made from within the Bill Pay system to pay BofA cards. If you use the Bill Pay system to pay other bills it alls remain the same (e.g. if you have a BofA checking account and pay your Chase bill or your Verizon bill trough BofA Bill Pay).

Email Subject: “Starting August 23, we’re changing the way you make payments to your personal credit card in Mobile and Online Banking”

Starting August 23, we’re changing the way you pay your personal Bank of America credit card — here’s what you need to know

We’re changing the way you make credit card payments in Mobile and Online Banking. The enhancements we’re making to Pay & Transfer will allow you to have better control over your payments.

As a part of these changes, starting August 23, you’ll no longer be able to use our Bill Pay Service to pay your personal Bank of America credit card.

We’ll cancel any one-time or recurring payments set up by you or another person on your behalf to your personal Bank of America credit card that are scheduled to process in the Bill Pay Service on or after August 23. Additionally, any one-time or recurring payments you scheduled to process on or after August 23 in the Bill Pay Service to pay another person’s personal Bank of America credit card will be canceled.

If you do cancel your payment(s) and want to schedule a one-time payment to process before August 23, you can do so in Mobile or Online Banking by selecting Pay & Transfer and clicking Transfer.
Here’s what else you need to know

    • If you have any scheduled payments set to process on or after August 23, you should cancel them. To cancel a payment, go to our Bill Pay Payment Center, locate your scheduled payment and click Cancel.
    • If you receive personal Bank of America credit card eBills and payment reminders through the Bill Pay Service today, they’ll be canceled. You can enroll in comparable alerts at bankofamerica.com/alerts.
    • You’ll still be able to use the Bill Pay Service to pay your other bills, but your personal Bank of America credit card will no longer be listed as an eligible payee.

Here are some of the enhancements we’re making

Starting on August 23, you’ll notice some changes in Mobile and Online Banking:

    • To make it easier for you, everything you need to pay and manage your card will be under the Pay & Transfer tab.
    • In Pay & Transfer, all of your payment activity will be in one place.
    • You’ll be able to set up recurring payments that better align to your statement dates and balances.
    • You can use an external account in Pay & Transfer to pay your credit card.

Don’t really notice a difference and the UI is still trash.

I just received a notification that my bill pay was deactivated and all recurring or scheduled payments have been canceled. Anyone get the same thing?

For those wondering what the new process is like:

From Accounts Overview, select a CC account, then under “Make a Payment” there is a “set up recurring payments” option. From there it takes you to a payment screen where you will probably have to re-add your external account. Just toggle “Make payment recurring” and then you can select Amount (minimum or balance or minimum + extra), Monthly Frequency (On or before due date), and When to Start (current or next bill).

Easy peasy.

Doesn’t work for me.
I don’t have time to spend days on a process that should, and does with other banks, take minutes.

Thanks for the summary. On your actual billpay page, were your BoA cards removed (assuming the were there previously)?

Sorry JD , not sure what you mean. I forgot what the old convoluted system was like, and I don’t see a page called Bill Pay in the new system

Thank you for this post! I didn’t see it before, checked my BoA credit card account, and noticed the auto-pay was cancelled and a late fee was incurred just yesterday. Called in and they were able to reverse the $39 fee, but the agent had no idea what happened, so I just reset the auto-pay so it hopefully should work again starting next month.

I received an email today that says the update is September 13. Maybe they’re rolling it out to different customers at different times

Just to add another DP: my payment center autopay and ebills are still active for my BoA credit cards. I also didn’t receive an email from BoA about any changes. It seems like this hasn’t been rolled out for everyone at the same time.

Am I the only one who is still seeing autopay from the payment center still working? This was the same method I used when I created the credit cards. I was approved 8 months ago for my first BofA account so maybe it was already using the new system?

Same, my Payment Center is still showing that AutoPay is turned on for my cards, and I have upcoming scheduled payments this month. I did not receive an email from Bank of America saying payments would be canceled. I did set them up to pay 2 days before the due date, so there’s time to correct anything that goes wrong.

I don’t think I see the new autopay system yet either, but I barely use my BoA credit cards so I don’t remember what the old system looked like either (just remembered that it was convoluted). Does anyone have screenshots of before/after of what the UI is supposed to look like?

Alex I think a good way to tell is based on the UI/UX. If the process looks and feels like from the early 2000s then it’s the old system. If the process looks and feels more like from the late 2010s-2020s then it’s the new system.

BOA credit card payment system is by far the worst of any bank or credit union I’ve even worked with, big or small, it’s not even remotely close. System is abusive and set up to collect interest and late payment fees. I’m surprised they haven’t been sued for this. I’ve spent countless hours on the phone with various accounts over the years trying to get auto pay set up, fixing it when it breaks for no reason, fighting for late fee / interest reimbursement due to payment system failures, it’s just astounding. As of today P1 account seems to be showing a new payment system for personal cards, but P2 account is still on old system with no changes. Also the change does not apply to small business cards, so it will continue to be business as usual sh**y scammy BOA if you have small biz cards. If previously set up auto pays have been cancelled, there no notifications or reminders, typical terrible BOA.

I don’t see any difference in my or P2 accounts. Previous autopays still show including a payment scheduled for today.

This is being slowly rolled out, so if you haven’t received any email about it you’re unaffected for now.
