Barclays Starts Issuing Upromise Mastercard Again – No Extra 5% Back On Portal

On February 18th, 2017 Barclays (then known as Barclaycard) discontinued the Upromise credit card. On April 25th, 2018 existing cardholders were product changed to the new Upromise Mastercard, but it wasn’t possible to sign up for that card directly. It’s now possible to sign up directly, but I can’t see any reason why you’d want to as the benefits are as follows:

  • 1.25% cash back on all purchases
  • 15% redemption bonus when you automatically redeem your cash back into a 529 account
  • Can also enroll your card in Round Ups (rounds up your purchase to the nearest dollar and then transfers this into a college saving account)
  • No annual fee

I can’t see why anybody would actually want this card. The old card was useful because you could earn 5% back on Upromise portal pruchases, but that is no longer a feature.

Does anyone have this card? I have an old cashforward card that hasn’t been used in over a year and if possible this seems like a decent one to PC into without missing out on a potential SUB. It seems like with the roundup feature you could set it to round up $100 (or whatever) with each purchase and then set up a small monthly recurring purchase and get a little back on upromise 529 contributions that would otherwise just be ACH with no rewards.

It rounds up to a dollar- I don’t think there’s a way to change that. The Upromise shopping portal sort of stinks compared to Rakuten, but the card can be pretty good depending on how you spend.. underrated, even. It competes for wallet space with 1.5-2% cards for people that want to keep it simple, I guess. A lot of reviews don’t seem to mention this, but the 15% redemption bonus you get for linking a 529 also applies to your roundup $- so if your roundup for the statement is $50, you’d get an extra $7.50 added to the ~1.43% (1.25+15%) you get through normal spend. It really shines when you have a lot of low dollar purchases with big round up values. With the bonus, my cashback is closer to 2.2% for the last 3 months without really trying to game it.

This is a phenomenal sock-drawer card. 😂 As sevillada said, the BT offers are excellent and flexible and they periodically send some good spend offers, but it usually takes 4+ months for those offers to credit. The new upromise website is atrocious though; pretty graphics but all functionality is gone.

I received more than $1000 for those days when 5% additional cash bask was valid. Now it is in the drawer.

Upromise used to be a great card for ebay purchases, but I dumped it a couple years ago when they changed that. This new version seems completely uncompetitive. I wonder why they would even bother. I can’t imagine in this new competitive landscape this can survive very long.

I am sad I missed this diamond in the rough when it paid 5% bonus on the Upromise portal…

i still have the old card…they offered me BT offer of 12+ months 0% with a 1% fee. it’s pretty much an interest-free loan (given inflation, etc), so I maxed it out lol

Same same. I’ve done it a few times. It’s nice that you can transfer the cash directly into your checking. I’ve used it for bank bonus deals that have high deposit req’s.

Any possibilities to product change? I would love to have the Uber card w/o a new account/pull. Yes, I know, be the data point you wish to see….

I tried, they told me the only way I could get the Uber Visa card would be with a hard pull. I just product changed to some stupid rewards card that’s basically sitting in a drawer now. Only reason I still keep it is because it’s only 6 months newer than my oldest card. If you try and receive different info I would love to be corrected! Maybe they got more lax over time, fingers crossed for you if you give it a try!

This card used to be my secret weapon. Dead to me since the changes last year and the Upromise dining program changes a year before that.
