Avoiding Fees
The monthly fees will vary slightly based on what state your living in. We suggest checking this before choosing your account. Most people will be best off going for the Bright Banking account and then using one of the fee waivers, unless you’re a student or senior in which case those accounts will be the best option.
BB&T Bright Banking® $10 monthly

- Receive $500 or more in direct deposits
- Have an average monthly balance of $1,500 or more
- Have $6,000 or more in combined deposits in checking, savings, Money Rate Savings, Investor’s Deposit Accounts
- Have an outstanding personal mortgage with BB&T

BB&T Identity Protection® Checking $6 monthly

Our Verdict
- Opening this account is a soft credit pull
- You cannot fund this account with a credit card
- We’re unsure what qualifies as a direct deposit apart from a employer payment or government benefit. Although direct deposit isn’t required to trigger this bonus
This looks like a great deal for those who are in the service area of BB&T. Unfortunately I’m not in this service area otherwise I would definitely be doing this deal. It’s nice that you don’t need to bother with direct deposits. You can also choose to pay the $5 monthly fee if you don’t have the $1,500 required to keep the bright banking account fee free.
You should be able to receive this bonus if you’ve held a BB&T account previously but haven’t held one in the last year:Â 1
Easiest Way To Meet The Bonus Requirements
- Open a BB&T Bright Banking® account
- Fund it with $1,575 (this will avoid the any monthly fees whilst giving you $75 to cover the three bills that need to be paid over $25)
- Pay three regular bills you have that are $25 or more (making sure you keep your balance at $1,500 or above to keep the account fee free)
- Wait for your bonus to post
- Ensure it’s been more than 90 days since the account was opened to avoid the early account termination fee
- Close account

I opened my account before the offer expired. On May 9th the last bill pay posted so it was time to wait for the bonus to post to my account. Well, more than 120 days have passed since I opened this account and no bonus. I decided to call them up and see what the heck happened. I was told no bonus offer was attached to my app but she could check with the promo department and see if the bonus can be applied. I got a call this morning and was told the bonus should post to my account within 7 business days. Time to wait some more but it’s better than getting nothing.
If it doesn’t post, call again. If they are still unhelpful then a complaint to the CFPB is in order.
I know this deal is dead but you mentioned that opening this account would be a soft pull but I got an experian alert when I opened this account so according to what you wrote on the Firstmark offer it was a hard pull because I got alerted by experian, so what is it?
What are you using for credit monitoring and what does it show when you’re alerted? I think your probably just being alerted on soft pulls as well as hard.
I use experian. This is the alert I received
“Identity Alerts notify you of activity using your personal information. They won’t appear on your credit report.”
Ok, that’s just a soft pull and nothing to worry about then.
