This is the same as the SunTrust bonus. BB&T & SunTrust have merged to become Truist, but it looks like it might be possible to do both deals? Even if you can’t there are some differences in the states allowed so this should be useful for some.

The Offer
Direct link to offer (promo code should auto apply)
- BB&T is offering a bonus of up to $1,000 when you complete the following requirements:
- Use promo code BCNGJ
- Open a checking account and complete qualifying direct deposits totaling at least $500 within 90 days of account opening
- Open any new BB&T savings or MMA, and deposit the balances below within 30 days and maintain for 90 days after account opening. Amount you deposit and maintain determines the bonus you receive:
- Less than $10,000 = $300
- $10,000 – $24,999.99 = $400
- $25,000 – $49,999.99 = $600
- $50,000 -$99,999.99 = $800
- $100,000 or more = $1,000
The Fine Print
- All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them
Avoiding Fees
Monthly Fees
Checking account has a $12 monthly fee, this is waived if you do either of the following:
- Receive a direct deposit of $500 or more
- Have an average daily balance of $1,500 or more
Early Account Termination Fee
They used to charge a $25 fee if closed within 180 days of account opening, but looks like that isn’t charged anymore. Accounts must be open at the time of bonus posting
Our Verdict
Pretty sure the rates for these accounts are 0% or close to, so just assume you’ll earn no actual interest. BB&T has offered a $600 checking bonus in the past, but that did require $25,000 in deposits to keep fee free. This bonus does require a deposit of $100,000 for 90 days, that works out to be 4% APY. We will add this to our list of the best bank account bonuses.

Is this deal active? The system applies a new promo code.
Can confirm, the household rules was not enforced. P1 and P2 applied and approved within weeks using the same code, P1 paid out sooner but P2 just paid out like all the other DPs below on the 16th.

A couple of notes. First, this was P2’s account, and the first DD was my paycheck. BB&T did not like this, and we had to spend a while on the phone getting the account unlocked. Second, I had a Bright checking account open when P2 signed up for an Elite Gold account. The Bright accounts qualified for the promotion, and, despite the terms saying something like the bonus not being available if a member of the household has “one of these accounts,” she still received the bonus.
May I ask how BB&T was able to figure out it was your paycheck going into P2’s account? I’m asking because I was seriously considering doing this for a different bonus but it hadn’t crossed my mind that it was possible for a bank to figure out the person whose money a DD would legitimately belong to.
I guess the data sent by ADP included my name? This is the first bank that has cared about different names
Likewise, you can see my datapoints below hand but my bonus was posted on the 16th as well.
Are there any recent DP’s confirming that BB&T no longer charges an early termination fee if we close before 180 days?
