Best Buy Credit Card Rewards Can Now Be Redeemed For Best Buy Gift Cards

Best Buy Rewards can now be redeemed for gift cards. Best Buy cardholders earn Best Buy Rewards on their purchases. Points value:

  • 500 points = $10 Best Buy certificate
  • 500 points = $10 Best Buy gift card
  • 500 points = $5 third party gift card for places like Amazon, Airbnb, Apple, Starbucks, Target, Home Depot, Walmart, etc.

And so it’s now possible to redeem points at the same value for non-expiring Best Buy gift card instead of an expiring Best Buy rewards certificate. (Note: some people prefer the certificates since it reduces the base cost and saves sales tax.)

Anyone enrolled in the Best Buy Rewards program can earn Best Buy Rewards on their purchases. Best Buy Cardholders can earn more on Best Buy purchases and also can sometimes earn on purchases elsewhere.

Honestly, this is one of the best sleeper / underrated credit card in the market.. I first got it when I made a $3k purchase and new card customer could avail instant 15% cashback in points with no limit.. So with no annual fees i scored $450 worth of points.. Since then I’ve been slowly using them.. They have a quarterly rewards program like other popular cards but theirs is so much better.. Plenty of Categories available and remain same throughout the year and you can choose your 5% category depending upon your requirements.. I use this card year round for 5% on utilities which other cards offer maybe one quarter

Also they send out best buy spending targets which are doable if u have a electronics need or can be met with a gift card purchase too

You can use best buy certificates for partial payments.. I’ve done it multiple times.. And it drastically reduces the tax

Also if u do have a certificate expiring, go buy something and then return it within window.. Best buy credits you the point back to account and you can convert your certificate back to points

Ultra Tip: in rewards website make auto redemption of points to certificates at $500 which is a lot and you won’t be troubled with an auto generated soon to be expiring certicate

Buy something using certificate and then return.. BB do not give you a certificate on return, instead credits equivalent points to your BB account

Does this work on promotional certificates?

Not really.

As far as I know, the Best Buy rewards have to spent at Best Buy. That kills things. Even with the option to buy 3rd party GCs, it is at lower rate. Not good.

It is cheating to use awards and return later. You can get caught if you keep doing it.

How do you combine best buy gift cards? I would expect to convert promotional certificate to gift cards. But then I will have many best buy gift cards with small balances.

Never mind. I guess promotional certificate won’t be able to purchase gift card, only points can. The BB credit card gives many promotional certificate offers after spending. But it’s pretty much useless since the promo certificate expires in 30 days, and with $10 or $20 you can buy nothing.

Good change honestly. This card offers some decent and easy spending bonuses almost every month but I was hesitant to do them as the certificates had an expiration for a month and I found out you cant use them to partly pay for an item which made them almost useless.

If you have the Best Buy credit card, the points never expire. At this point in time, the only way you earn Best Buy points is with the credit card, so I’m not sure why anyone at this point would have lingering rewards (they made the change in March 2023). Moreover, certificates created from points don’t really ever expire. They’ll expire on your end, but you can call Best Buy to get them reinstated.

With that being said, converting points to gift cards isn’t the best idea. Gift cards are treated like cash whereas rewards certificates are treated like coupons. This is important for taxes. Rewards reduce the taxable amount, whereas gift cards do not.

$100 purchase made with $100 in gift cards in a 6% sales tax state will cost you $6 in taxes.

$100 purchase made with $100 in rewards certificates in this same example will cost you $0 in taxes.

I have this card. The issue isn’t with reward points from spending, but with reward certificate from special offers. For example, if you spend $50 in a single purchase four times, you might get a $20 reward certificate. That certificate would expire within a month or so. That gets frustrating. This is a huge upgrade for those offers, but I wouldn’t redeem the certificates from normal spend for gift cards like you mentioned, but only for the spend “challenges” which can be quite lucrative. I might have to start using this card again in between sign up bonuses. Great earnings

Very well said and I agree. Using points to purchase Best buy avoids sales tax and best to convert when you ready to make any purchase.

Anyone who has the Best Buy credit card, let me know what offers you’ve gotten. Is it as good as the citi SYW Mastercard. Really like the SYW card from citi.

No good. The reward can offset tax charged. Not gift card.
