Overview
Bilt Rewards website | Bilt Credit Card
Bilt is a platform for rent payments. They have specific landlord partnerships in their system (2,000,000+ rentals):
- The Blackstone Group, The Related Companies, Equity Residential, AvalonBay Communities, Inc., Camden Property Trust, Cushman & Wakefield, Trammell Crow Residential, Highmark Residential, AMLI Residential, Morgan Properties, SL Green Realty Corp., Starwood Capital Group, LivCor, GID, The Moinian Group, Veritas Investments, and Artemis Real Estate Partners.
They can also send a check out to any other landlord who is not in their system.
Bilt is launching a credit card which can earn rewards when paying rent. There is no cost to the renter or landlord. Aside from earning rewards with the Bilt credit card, it can also help someone build a credit history based on their rent payments.

Our Verdict
Chuck’s Verdict: The impressive travel partners Bilt has is pretty interesting for a startup, especially Hyatt and AA some will enjoy. Overall this card is probably a bit too complicated to be worthwhile for most people as you’d have to do some nice spend at 1x per dollar in order be eligible to earn points on your rent payments. You’d have to have all the chips falling exactly right for it be worthwhile. For example, someone with a $2,000 monthly rent payment can spend $3,500 on other purchases, and they’ll walk away with 7,500 transferable points which is more than 2x per dollar for the $3,500 spend.
Will’s Verdict: I asked Bilt what sort of guarantee they will be offering that rent arrives on time and they stated that they allow for three business days for the check to arrive but there is no guarantee in place. I think that’s going to cause some issues at the very least in the short term. That’s not an issue for Bilt Rewards with the linked property managers I assume.
Note: If you’re wondering why the two different verdict’s it’s because we both wrote posts on this at the same time. Not something that will likely happen again!
.
I wonder if they would count monthly payments to Assisted living / nursing homes? It’s kind of like rent, but “all inclusive” (care, food, etc)
Can I pay my mortgage through Bilt? Where do I find a list of landlord that is part of the Bilt Rewards Alliance
Blackstone or big companies should not be allowed to buy single family homes, they are the reason people are priced out of market.
Vast majority of rental units are owned by “mom and pop” landlords who own 3-4 properties and rent them out for extra income. Source: Bloomberg https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-01-20/inventory-vanishing-and-bidding-wars-exploding-in-crazy-u-s-housing-market?srnd=oddlots-podcast
Ok to be mad at Blackstone if you want but the real problem is not enough housing being built.
The real problem is cheap credit.
How can the problem be not enough houses if there are enough for one family to own 4. That’s just greed. When the situation arises that people who *want* to own are *forced* to rent, that’s how you know it’s gone too far.
Nice to read both Chuck’s and Will’s verdicts to see both sides of the coin, and even the edge
An angle here to just ignore the 3.5k spend and get half point per dollar on rent. This would be great for those of us who currently are unable to use credit cards for rent (because of fee). Free 1k point on 2k rent + interest free loan for a month and half is not bad.
I can see it make sense for someone with an $8k rent: spend $250 to be eligible for the .5x and then pay your $8k rent with the card. Niche.
Seems like 2k rent is the maximum, no points beyond that
Ahh, okay, I had thought the 4k points was the limitation
4k points is the max, not $2k rent.
I liked the double verdict!
Thank you for this review! Initially when looking at the Bilt website, this sound like an amazing deal…until you understand all the caveats that are not clearly listed. I was skeptical when I saw Points Guy endorsing it anyway but thanks for breaking down the detail. I’ll take a hard pass on this. 🙂
“I was skeptical when I saw Points Guy endorsing it…”
LOL
I was just thinking “how can I complicate my rent further and earn less rewards than I currently do”. Bilt saves the day!
How do you currently earn rewards on rent?
.
RIchard here from the Bilt Rewards team, can you explain how you’re currently earning rewards on rent?
Plastiq
The no fees on rent payment with the credit card is the attractive part. But other than that, I don’t see how this beats Amex BBP.
