(Update) Bluebird Adds $3.74 Fee For Walmart Reloads

(Update 7/1/23: Change now in effect)

(Update 3/30/23: Readers are now getting the same email about the fee getting added for their Amex Bluebird cards as well. The change will affect both Visa and Amex Bluebird versions.)

I forget this product still exists – Bluebird sent out an email today that a $3.74 fee is being added for loading the card at Walmart, beginning July 1, 2023.

As a valued Bluebird customer, we wanted to make you aware of some changes happening soon.

Free cash reloads at Family Dollar: Beginning March 30, 2023, cash reloads on your Bluebird card at Family Dollar will be free! You can look up your nearest Family Dollar location here. The process for reloads remains the same – just swipe at the register!

Fee for reloads at Walmart: Also, beginning July 1, 2023, cash reloads at Walmart locations will no longer be free, and will incur a cost of $3.74.  > Add money, add convenience.

A few questions about this: 1. Do they run EWS? 2. Do they run Chex? 3. I was thinking of applying for the Visa and Amex version back-to-back. Does that sound like a bad idea?

It seems like One card https://www.one.app/ now offers free reloads and cashouts at walmart….does this work with debit cards or just cash?

Earlier Walmart had $500 visa gift cards issued by Metabank that could be loaded in single transaction on BB/Serve. I went there yesterday and saw none of these. There were ample of $500 VGCs but all are Vanilla cards issued by some other bank. Does anyone know what happened to the metabank $500 VGCs?

Are GC’s (to load BB) considered cash?

Yes. Otherwise, not a single person reading this site would care.

Been keeping this secret but I’m no longer in the game for quite a while so not sure if this no longer works, and with this update as well, so I guess it’s fine to let this out:

You can actually load BB at WM directly using a CC (just like the ol’ RB at Target). I used to do this a lot at my local WMNM with my Amex Gold card so I got 4x MR right away. Although the cashier might deny you since they’re seeing “(VISA/MC/AMEX) TEND” instead of “DEBIT TEND”.

YMMV in my home state this has never worked.

Honestly, this isn’t the only play that has worked direct to credit. People would be surprised if they had the stones to just try it once in awhile.

flyfaraway Unless this was resurrected, it died about two years ago. It was going strong from like 2019-2021. Would love to be corrected though.
