You Can Redeem Citi ThankYou Points At Bestbuy.com & Why You Shouldn’t (0.8¢ Per Point)

Citi has added another merchant that allows you to redeem your Citi ThankYou points directly with, this time adding BestBuy.com. Here’s how:

  • Visit BestBuy.com on your desktop or mobile device or use the Best Buy app to select your purchase among thousands of products and solutions (cardmembers can also be directed via ThankYou.com)
  • Enter an eligible Citi ThankYou credit card at checkout
  • View available ThankYou Points balance and select the amount of points you would like to use up to the full purchase amount
  • Complete checkout with your eligible Citi credit card; the full purchase amount will be charged to your card and a statement credit for the dollar amount used in points will be applied within 24 – 48 hours

Citi has made similar partnerships with Expedia & Wonder. Unfortunately when you redeem Citi ThankYou points at BestBuy.com, you’ll only get 0.8¢ per point. You’ll also earn 1x point per $1 in spend, even when redeeming points. 0.8¢ per point is the same cash rate you get for Citi ThankYou points, so you’d be better off redeeming for cash and than using a credit card and portal at BestBuy.com instead.

I really think Citi needs to offer 1¢ per point in value to make these partnerships useful, but maybe they are just hoping to get a few people to redeem their points cheaply.

For $0.01 per point, you can call and request a check to pay a “loan” (no docs required, you just tell them the bank name). It will be mailed to you but written out to your bank, not in your name, so confirm with your bank that they accept “third party checks” beforehand. I can confirm BoA does, Everbank does not.

And if you get the wrong teller, be willing to sit around and explain how and why you’re not check kiting…

Yes, this is the same 20% haircut you get on Amazon with TYP. At least with BB you can purchase gift cards for use in stores or online at par value.

What are the best ways to get at least a penny each from C TYP? I can’t transfer to airline miles in my account.
