Capital One Launches New Playstation Credit Card ($50 & 5x Points Earning)

Capital One has partnered with Sony Rewards to launch a new Playstation credit card.

Card Basics

  • No annual fee
  • $50 PlayStation Store Code after making your first purchase
  • Card earns at the following rates:
    • 5x points on the PlayStation Store
    • 5x points on Playstation & Sony purchases at authorized retailers with purchase confirmation
    • 3x points on mobile phone bills
    • 1x points on all other purchases
  • 0% Introductory APR on purchases until March 2018
  • 50% back as a statement credit off a 12-month PlayStation Plus Membership after you make $3,000 in purchases within one year
  • 10% back as a statement credit off the following entertainment services:
    • PlayStation Vue
    • PlayStation Music
    • PlayStation Now

Our Verdict

I actually think this card is kind of interesting, for example the 5x points on PlayStation/Sony products actually earns 1x and then you need to submit a Sony Rewards Bonus Points form to get the other 4x points. The statement credit offers are also pretty interesting. It’s nice to see card issuers actually try to innovate somewhat rather than offering the same basic rewards programs and structures. Capital One used to just have the Sony rewards credit card, so it looks like they have expanded this partnership to include a PlayStation card as well. The Sony card used to be somewhat interesting because it frequently had a $200 sign up bonus, but we haven’t seen that for some time.

Personally I don’t think this card is worth signing up for, the sign up bonus isn’t particularly strong (only $50 credit) and most people won’t be spending a lot on the PlayStation store or on PlayStation/Sony products. It’s also issued by Capital One, meaning they will pull all three of your credit reports. I’d recommend reading this post if your new to Capital One cards as well.

This is in general worse than the old PlayStation card. Too bad the old card is no longer offered (and it’s not clear if they are going to auto convert people from old to new card).

The old card has 10x reward on PS store purchases, and 3x on movie theatres and fast food restaurants. The only thing the new card is better than the old card is the signup bonus, and for subscription ps services (PS Vue, PS Now, PS Music, etc.), they give you 10x back as statement credit (vs. sony reward points).

I hope they don’t nerf the old one. I have the OG PS card. It is my oldest tradeline. As a gamer, it’s beneficial.
I haven’t received any info that they’re downgrading to 5x from 10x on PS purchases.

This is a new car, it’s a relaunch. The PlayStation Visa card from Capital One has been out for a few years, in fact it used to offer 10x points on Sony and Playstation purposes. So this new product relaunch is actually a Nerf.

This isn’t a new card! Sorry that’s what I meant to say. Autocorrect changed it.

I have the PlayStation card from at least 6 years ago. It earns 10x at playstation stores, 3x cellphone bills and restaurants.

I probably would have signed up for this card in my teens…

Cap One is trying to get that precious young whipper-snapper debt!

I think this is just a carbon copy/rebranding of the Sony Card. I only remember it because I almost got it before settling on the Marvel Card for Synchrony for “entertainment” purchases since I spent a lot of money on video games from Steam Store at the time.
