Capital One Venture X Changes $300 Travel Statement Credit Into $300 Coupon

The $300 travel credit on the Capital One Venture X card is changing from being a statement credit to becoming a coupon you apply to your purchase at checkout on the Capital One booking portal. This is a slight devaluation for a few reasons:

  • If you purchase a refundable ticket and cancel, you’ll get back the $300 coupon for future use. BUT you won’t be able to keep the $300 statement credit, as was previously  the case. (It should still be possible to bank the credit with an airline who offers such a cancellation policy.)
  • We will no longer earn 5/10x on the purchase for that $300 charge since the cost is simply reduced as a coupon.
  • The $300 in spend will no longer count toward your minimum spend requirement

Here’s what’s showing in the app (bolding my own):

What’s changed?

The $300 annual travel credit was previously delivered via statement credit. It will no longer be delivered as a statement credit as it is now directly redeemable through Capital One Travel.

How can I use my $300 annual travel credit?

Eligible Venture X primary account holders receive a $300 annual Capital One Travel credit available to use for bookings through Capital One Travel.

To use your credit, select the option to apply it at checkout when you’re ready to make your next purchase through Capital One Travel. The credit may be used in whole for a single purchase or in part over multiple purchases. You can view your annual travel credit and any other travel credits by navigating to My Travel Credits and Offers within Capital One Travel.

Each annual credit will expire on the next account open date anniversary. If the purchase using the credit is canceled, the credit will be restored if it is not expired. Rewards will not be earned on the credit. Your Venture X card account must be open and in good standing to receive or use the Credit.

The annual fee for this just posted to my account 9/2/24. I opened this card 9/10/23. The travel credit has not reset. Will it reset on 9/11/24 or when does it reset?

Are there any latest datapoints for changing the credit to Delta eCredits?

DO NOT USE Capital One Travel Portal to book their tickets. The ticket price they quote on their travel portal is inflated, they charge more for the same fare you actually book through the airline and worst of all, they force you to book hotel and air ticket through their price-inflated travel portal in order for you to get your $300 travel credit. I had booked a jet blue flight that Jet blue charges $64 on jet blue website but Capital One Travel Portal charges $94, same fare class, same date and time and Capital One Travel refuses to acknowledge that they are duping their Venture X card holders with inflated price.

Is it possible to double dip the travel credit with the new coupon process?

I booked a flight and after 5 days I cancelled it and got delta e-credit. 12 hours later I got email from capital one that credits were refunded back to capital one and delta e-credits disappeared. It was available to book immediately again on capital one portal. I just booked another flight way in the future and will cancel the flight once I have closed this card.

Did you purchase a refundable ticket for that flight?

No just regular main cabin. No point in booking refundable ticket with capital one travel coupon.

Hmm. I was able to book a non-refundable Main Cabin Delta flight, cancel four days later, and retain the e-credit. I wonder what was different from your end.

I booked an American Airlines main cabin ticket. The flight is in late September 2024. When I cancel this flight, will I receive a credit that is valid one year from cancellation date or from purchase date?

If it is from cancellation date, then it makes sense to wait until September 2024 to cancel this flight and request a travel credit. Am I missing something here?

Per the terms: “If the purchase using the Credit is canceled, the Credit will be restored if it is not expired. An expired Credit will not be restored upon cancellation.” The travel credit will expire 1 year after it was first issued, not 1 year from cancellation date nor 1 year from purchase date.

looks like capital one is conducting a credit review if you don’t spend a lot on their card

I have this card from last year and did not use my $300 credit yet.
I went to the capital one travel site and do not see the option to apply this credit during checkout.

When you received price drop protection credit, when do those credits expire? I don’t see any expiration date next to them like the venture x $300 annual travel credit.

When to cancel the card? Before AF or after AF hits? Do they refund or prorate AF?
