Update 5/6/20: Some people were worried as there had been no official announcement/notice from Chase regarding this (despite Chase reaching out to bloggers). E-mails have now been sent out to some cardholders.
Original post: Chase earlier announced that the Chase Marriott card would earn 6x points per $1 spent at grocery stores until July 31st (maximum $5,000 in spend). Other Chase cards are offering the following bonuses from May 1st until June 30th, with a cap of $1,500 per month in spend on grocery store purchases:
- Chase Sapphire Preferred: Earn 3x points per $1 spent
- Chase Sapphire Reserve: Earn 5x points per $1 spent
- Chase United Club Infinite/Club & Presidential Plus: Earn 5x miles per $1 spent
- Chase United Explorer, United MileagePlus: Earn 3x miles per $1 spent
- Chase British Airways, Aer Lingus, Ibera: Earn 3x miles per $1 spent
- Chase Southwest Plus, Premier & Priority: Earn 3x miles per $1 spent
- Chase World of Hyatt & Chase Hyatt: Earn 3x points per $1 spent
- Chase IHG Premier/Club Select: Earn 3x points per $1 spent
- Chase Disney Premier: Earn 3% back
- Chase Freedom is also earning 5% back this quarter (limited to $1,500 in total spend for the quarter). This is just part of the rotating categories.
Obviously the Chase Sapphire Reserve is your best bet. For the best credit cards for grocery store spend normally, click here.
Accidentally used my CSR at grocery store today to the tune of $400. Whoops. Any chance we can mark this as dead?
Ouch! Done.
Thanks!
Security why ‘whoops’? still not too shabby… redeem its PYB with UR pts
I’ve got to earn em before I can burn em
I was around $12 from maxing out the $1500 on my CSR card so I mad a couple of purchases the other day. Checked my transactions yesterday and it came out to exactly $1500. Couldn’t have done better if I tried!
BTW since I do not see a place where Chase tells you how you are doing towards the quarterly/monthly max I used the following Excel formula to total my grocery purchases. I download the entire year of transactions (since I do not see a way to download only the current quarter/month) and delete the lines that are not within the quarter. This way there is no need to delete the non-grocery transactions. Update the two 64’s in the ranges to equal the line of the bottom of the range of transactions.
=SUMIF(D2:D64,”Groceries”,F2:F64)
Any idea if this is by (I) transaction date or (ii) posting date? In other words, when would be last day to make purchase to take advantage of 5x/3x UR at grocery stores?
On the Freedom card, I seem to recall that the quarterly bonuses work on the transaction date, not posting date. Discover works on the post date, as I found out the hard way.
Got it. Thanks so much for sharing your helpful experience!
So I’m guessing we’re not getting an extension of this into July. With the “Pay yourself back” feature, Chase probably figured out that they were being too generous. But it was good while it lasted. Too bad I didn’t use it in May, but i did manage to clear all of my UR points.
I too have been hoping for an extension into July, as I will be downgrading my Blue Cash Preferred at that point and would then find the CSP’s 3X UR points and 1.25X “Pay yourself back” to be the best for groceries for a little while. But I have yet to hear any word of an extension.
If you are a Verizon Wireless customer, their new Visa offers 4x points on supermarkets.
My CSR, CSP, SW Plus and Premier all earned the 5X/3X bonuses in May. My United Mileage plus earned 1 Mile per $2 which is the normal. I called they said to follow up in July. Girl wasn’t sure if I should earn 3mile per $ or 3X which is 3X 0.5 miles per $1
uggggg….. having a similar problem. so’s CSR last month had the 5x calculated just fine, and clearly on statement. BUT I just got my first Chase United Explorer Mileage plus statement (biz version) since learning of this promotion and it’s showing NOTHING special for the grocery credit. The statement actually shows NOTHING about miles earned. My corresponding United account shows (I’m guessing) 1 miles per dollar spent. (normal rate for this card, but no grocery miles special credit!?) Ah yes, it was all supposed to be automatic…. Intensely dislike this card…. Is this United’s fault (as per usual) or chase?
footnote, ok, I found the miles indication on the statement, at very top right of statement…. but it’s just 1x. What gives? No chase chat option available, sent s.m….. Very irritated. Annoyed I might be told that never mind the exact name match of my card to the cnbc press and all that, somebody’s going to tell me nope, not for business versions of these cards. (don’t recall any of you bloggers so warning us) Anybody?
ps, and nope, this promotion did not exclude business versions of the card. I’m sure of that, because I actually have a secure message from May 15th from Chase where they assured me that:
“You will receive either a total of three times, 3% miles on their grocery store purchases between May 1 and June 30, 2020. The offer doesn’t require opt in or enrollment. You are automatically enrolled. Spend cap of $1,500 per calendar month for the offer.”
Good I have that record, as Chase/United can’t seem to get it right on the execution.
Supertarget coding as groceries for me on CSR (5x)
I’d imagine that my grocery store transaction would have to be posted at the end of May to qualify for May’s bonus or would a pending transaction in may be ok too?
Anybody know if you can double dip the grocery promo through a CSP to CSR PC?
Chase rep just reported that the “JP Morgan Reserve” also gets 5% on groceries. He said it is a unique card, not showing for signup on chase.com; he suspects you must apply in branch. I had never heard of this card. $550 annual fee and similar but weaker benefits than the Sapphire Reserve. …It does show on the Sapphire page below. Really pretty 😉
It came out with CSR and replaced Palladium.

For Sapphire, Chase seems to have a page on this that is not tied to your login: https://www.chase.com/personal/credit-cards/sapphire-beyond
Thanks, I’ve been trying to find info on chase’s website.
