Chase has now released the details on the Q1 2018 quarterly category for the Chase Freedom card:
- Chase Pay, Android Pay, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay
- Gas stations
- Internet/Cable/Phone services
You can find this in your Chase rewards login at this link. You can find eligible merchants at this link. There’s a long list of gas stations there, and also a list of phone providers; it even counts Netflix, Spotify, and Gogo as eligible merchants.
- Gas Stations does not include merchants that do not specialize in selling automotive gasoline; for example, truck stops, boat marinas, oil and propane distributors, and home heating companies.
- Internet/Cable/Phone Services only purchases for internet, cable, satellite television, radio, cellular, wireless data, and landline services will qualify. Please note that purchases of equipment are not included. In addition, if you purchase or pay for your internet, cable and satellite television, phone or related services in a merchant’s store that is not classified by the merchant in the applicable services category, the purchase or payment will not qualify; for example, phone bill payments in a merchant’s store that is classified as a telephone equipment store.
- Chase Pay, Android Pay, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay includes purchases made using your Freedom card with your Chase Pay, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, or Android Pay digital wallet during check out. Eligible purchases only qualify for a total of 5% Cash Back rewards; purchases made using eligible wallets at other current 5% quarterly categories will be awarded a total of 5% Cash Back rewards on up to $1500 in combined purchases.
The mobile payments option makes it incredibly easy to max out the category by simply paying at the store with your mobile device instead of swiping the card. Easy to max out on gift cards too. Even online purchases with these mobile wallets should work.
Gas stations and communications are useful categories as well, but lots of people already earn bonus rewards on the gas and communication category. Chase INK earns 5x on utilities, and gas is a popular bonus category on various cards.
Discover has already released their categories for the entire 2018; Q1 2018 is Gas and Wholesale Clubs. We’ll have to wait on finding out the Citi Dividend categories.

I have 3 freedom cards and looking to buy $500 gift cards somewhere online / in store. any particular places any suggestions ? I really appreciate your help in advance !!!
My Local Grocery store has $500 MC’s issued by U.S. Bank. They accept apple pay. Once i buy them, where can these GC’s issued by US Bank be liquidated? Any Idea?
Which gas stations use mobile wallet (chase/apple pay) to purchase giftcards? Any idea? also problem is, most do not sell $500 GC’s.
Does walgreen sell $500 GC’s that can be bought with Chase/Apple pay? And where to liquidate them?
I thought I activated the quarterly bonus but when I checked, I haven’t and I’ve already made purchases using SP.
Will my purchases count toward the bonus? My statement has NOT closed.
Anyone know if an Amazon Music subscription codes as a radio service?
@Eddy What about a republic wireless motor from eBay, like a used
Moto-G1-Fully-functional phone for $15 on ebay? Could it be used or should I stick with Samsung types of phones?

So, Costco gas doesn’t count for Gas station merchant?
Usualy costco gas is set up as a separate entity and codes as a gas station.
For anyone who is still checking in on this, my Costco gas purchases in January counted in the 5% reward category.
Although your post says this excludes propane distributors, I have successfully gotten 5x both of the prior quarters when gas was a bonus category when paying my propane bill over the phone with my Freedom.
Interesting, apparently the communications category includes things like Netflix, Spotify, and Gogo. Updated the post.
