Chase has released the 5x categories for the first quarter of 2025 on their Freedom and Freedom Flex cards, up to $1,500 in spend:
- Grocery Stores (excluding Walmart & Target)
- Fitness Clubs & Gym Memberships
- Hair, Nails, & Spa Services
- Norwegian Cruise Lines
- During month of March 2025: Insurance Payments (this combines toward the $1,500 quarterly limit)
- During month of March 2025: Tax Preparation Services (this combines toward the $1,500 quarterly limit)
Lots of people will find the Grocery category useful. Those who have a signup bonus offer for bonus 9x points on Grocery during their first year of card membership will be getting 14x during this quarter.
Speaking of NCL, Chase is not the MVP in that league — I just got an Amex Offer for $200 back on a $1,000 purchase, expiring 12/31/24.
Groceries! 14%! So glad I got that 10% bonus the day before it ended.
Cruise lines… OK, well, not for me. But 5% on airlines, now that would be interesting.
Or “5x UR,” rather.
Oh wow… Just noticed I have an offer for 10% cashback with Air Canada on my Chase Amazon card.

Have it on my original Freedom as well as my Prime card.
When I went to activate this (via Android Chase app), the fine print stated this: “Starting March 1st through March 31st, you will earn 5% cash back on a surprise birthday category: Tax Preparation and Insurance.”
That is included in the $1500 quarterly limit. March is not my birthday month (but close), but it may be my card opening anniversary.
Saw that too. It’s their 15th birthday. The insurance one will be good for me as I have a big bill coming.
Same
Pretty useless for me. I’d rather earn 4x MR on my Amex Gold than 5x UR for grocery.
Just curious, why? I have both and use my Gold for all grocery. Will probably switch to Chase to accumulate some UR since I have a war chest of MR.
I only care about groceries since i can easily purchase gift cards there.
Q1 Grocery sponsored by Norwegian Cruise Lines.
Norwegian better than McDonald’s?
Chase is, in fact, not lovin’ it.
Chase needs to cut the shameless advertising as a category bullshit
Norwegian 😄🤪
is it better then an Equinox Gym AmexPlat credit?
Is for me. Already have an NCL cruise booked for Jan 2025, so this is awesome.
That one was great until they cut the SPA loophole.
i use equinox. amex plat credit and employer discount, so sure why not. achieved 3x body weight deadlift, 1.9x bench, 2x squat
Which you could have never done without the amex credit, right? 🤪
it ingrained the feeling of i’m spending 200 on a gym membership might as well go
Don’t laugh. I’m taking my Norwegian Forest Cat to Norway so she can meet her ancestors.
My parrot is pining for the fjords.
