Chase has revealed the Freedom 5% categories for the fourth quarter of 2022:
- Paypal
- Paypal works at millions of online retailers and I find it one of the easiest categories to use. You can donate to many charities with Paypal or even pay your federal taxes with a credit card using Paypal.
- Walmart
- There aren’t typically ways of getting Walmart bonused so this is also a nice category.
These categories will go live for activation tomorrow at this link. Today is also the final day to activate the categories for Q3 2022.
Just noticed Chase didn’t give 5% on any purchases I made after the first two weeks of October…going to have to talk to them. Wonder if this is a common issue, i never checked rewards received at the transaction level before…
Walmart seems to limit amounts of Visa debit cards you can charge at the regular cash register… $100 or $200… after several declined transactions, they told me to go to customer service, and I was able to buy $500 Visa debit card there with the Freedom Flex, but not at the regular cash register
I bought a $500 Visa gc at a regular register with no issue a few weeks ago.
how much is the fee for $500 vgc there?
I think it was $4.94.
Any recent dps on this working with friends and family for 2.9% fee?
seems listed as an exclusion now
I’m seeing a Paypal deal (maybe targeted) for 4% at CVS, could stack for 11% back.
Exclusions may apply (“Except for certain product-specific offers, such as PayPal Exclusive Offers, we will not be able to determine if the item(s) you have purchased are eligible for Points or the number of Points that you will earn for that purchase until after you make your purchase”)
Expires in 5 days for me…
I just got charged a cash advance fee when making a federal tax payment through Paypal on ACI Payments. The tax payment processed as a purchase, but the convenience fee was charged as a cash advance, and I then also got hit with a $10 fee + interest.
I also made a Paypal tax payment through PayTaxUSA . I did not run into the same problems. The tax payment AND convenience fee through PayTaxUSA (via Paypal) processed as purchases.
So the issue is with ACI Payments. Do NOT pay tax payments via Paypal on ACI payments.
Can I pay with GOOGLE PAY and then Use My PayPal account with a linked Chase Card? Mainly thinking about buying some GCs from the Grocery store. The store doesnt accept PayPal. Looking for a way to use GP to then trigger the PayPal Chase 5%
Looking at my GP account I linked the PayPal account, but never used GP at checkout at an Instore Location. SO I dont know the options there.
No Discover card for digital wallet option this quarter?
I’ve never been able to get PayPal to work with GP even though it’s linked. It’s probably user error 🙂
I never used GP in side a store to see if my linked account could work. Even if I scan the code, I dont know what would happen. Would GP even let me choose which payment method I wanted to use and would PayPal show Up. I asked this some place else and someone said it would only work on paypal balance or debit. Which makes sense but is unfortunate.
I’ve run across more and more sites that require a PayPal balance or the linked bank/debit account so that makes sense that it would work that way.
A heads up that the service fee portion of a tax payment through ACI Payments via PayPal triggered a cash advance on CFF. The tax payment portion posted as purchase and earned the 5% though.
Both service fee and tax payment portions through payUSAtax posted as purchases and earned 5%.
Same happened to me =( Wish I’d seen your comment before I made the payment.
No Walmart gas stations in Boston, MA. What is the difference between Walmart and Walmart Superstore? Does the Superstore have fresh produce groceries? I prefer to avoid highly processed foods.
Hey, just noticed that the consolidated Q4 2022 post isn’t up yet.
We do have that up 🙂 https://www.doctorofcredit.com/q4-2022-5-quarterly-categories-activate-offers-suggestions-freedom-flex-discover-dividend-cash-more/
I wish there was a way to pay more bills/insurance/other monthly payments with PayPal or other online payments like Google pay Samsung pay etc. so can’t figure out anyway to pay those in order to get cash back during certain categories. Like my car insurance/health insurance etc. are sizable bills so it would be great to get some sort of cash back on those instead of the little one percent like on some credit cards. Most of those only accept credit/debit/online checking payments.
If anyone has any ideas, it would be much appreciated. I even tried using prepaid Visa/MasterCard credit cards that I would purchase from stores for these and sometimes the merchants/ Insurance companies/billers don’t accept them or show payment errors/ declined the payment method.
Weird! I have made car/home/health insurance, phone/internet payments with Visa/MC debit cards bought from grocery stores, never had a problem. You have to use debit option though, if you use credit option, they might be rejected.
You can use PayPal bill pay. I used it a few times this quarter for the Discover PayPal category. It worked to pay utility and car insurance bills.
Interesting, I saw the option on their site, but never looked into it. How bad are the fees compared to what is earned for cash back? If paying bills through there, how quickly is the payment confirmed or processed by the merchant? Depending on the merchants such as insurance, we just have to be careful to pick the right one.
It’s similar to bill pay with a bank. There are no fees. The site says your account will be credited in 2 business and that has been the case in my experience.
I actually tried with multiple utility bills and all got error message and couldn’t proceed for the last step.
