Chase Freedom Q4 Categories: Walmart and Department Stores

Chase has now unveiled the Q4 categories for their Freedom card. It’ll be Walmart and Department Stores. Category 5% bonus dates are October 1 through December 31. You can begin enrolling on September 15th.

  • Walmart includes physical stores, walmart.com, and Walmart gas, but does not include Sam’s Club. You can easily buy a Walmart gift card at Walmart or walmart.com and use that at Sam’s Club.
  • Department Stores should include places like Macy’s, Kohl’s, Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack, and Neiman Marcus. Full list can be found here.  It does not include discount stores or super-centers such as Target, Costco, BJ’s, or Sam’s Club.

Walmart sells tons of gift cards which make it feasible to max out the category even for those who don’t shop there. They even sell Visa and Mastercard variable-load cards, though I’m not sure if these can be purchased with a credit card currently or not.

And with the holiday season, lots of people will be able to take advantage of the Department Store category as well.

Full Fine Print:

  • The “Walmart” category does not include merchants operating within or on Walmart premises such as merchants that sell fast food, beauty services, and gas stations that are not Walmart branded. Walmart affiliate businesses such as Sam’s Club are excluded and will not earn bonus rewards. Please see https://creditcards.chase.com/freedom/merchants for merchants included and merchants not included in the Walmart Category. For more information, please see Chase Freedom Frequently Asked Questions. Visit Walmart.com to find the location nearest you.
  • Purchases in the ‘Walmart’ category include purchases at Walmart Discount Stores, Walmart SuperCenters, Walmart Neighborhood Markets, www.walmart.comopens overlay, Walmart branded gas stations operated by Walmart, and any other Walmart branded retail stores operated by Walmart. Please note that merchants operating within or on Walmart premises such as merchants that sell fast food, beauty services, and gas stations that are not Walmart branded are not included in this category. Walmart affiliate businesses such as Sam’s Club are also not included in this category. Please click hereopens overlayopens overlay to find the Walmart location nearest you.
  • The Department Store category does not include supercenters, discount stores or specialty stores (i.e. stores that sell primarily one line of products such as shoe stores, pet stores, electronics stores, clothing stores); if a merchant is not on the list, you will not earn bonus rewards. Department Store gift card purchases outside of the specific Department Store are excluded and will not earn bonus rewards. Please see https://creditcards.chase.com/freedom/merchants/ for merchants included and merchants not included in the Department Store category. For more information, please visit chase.com/freedom and click on the “View Chase Freedom FAQs” link at the bottom of the page.

I was being told Online purchase from any Department Stores does not earn 5%. Is that true? I argued with CS from Chase twice already.

Just received an email from Chase that ” use chase pay with your chase freedom card at shoprite stores or at shoprite.com in December” can earn 5% from 12/1/ to 12/31.

This is good for those who have not max out the 5% in Walmart this quarter

Someone said Greendot cards at WM can be bought with Chase F card

Who issues Greendot and where can they be liquidated?

Thank You. Can you shed some light on what kind of Green *’s are they?

a) My WMT has Re-leoadable ones only and there is a fee to buy them.

b) are there any Non-loadable ones or all Green *’s are re-loadable ones only?

c) Also any limit on how much can be loaded per card?

d) what to do with Green * card after draining it? Throw away or reload?

e) Different banks or only one bank issues them?

The system wouldn’t take my credit card, said “canceled” on screen. Cashier said debit or cash only after that appeared.

Kind of disappointing considering I’m already getting 5% back at Target with the Target Red Debit Card.

Target isn’t included. I’d imagine this would benefit you seeing as you already have 5% at Target and now have 5% at Walmart and department stores.

This is obviously their answer to Discover’s 5% at Target next quarter.

Super confused to see all the wmt.com excluded comments: the faq explicitly includes walmart.com and so does the post.

Oh, just not see Chucks comment which implies that the post didn’t make this explicit in an earlier version.

Apparently, I can’t read either 😛

That specific detail only appeared when the CF 2017Q4 public calendar updated when Sept 15 started.

Activated. The terms on Chase’s website make it clear that walmart.com IS included.
