Our Verdict
We saw this exact offer a year back, then it changed to 5% Gas instead of Grocery. A lot of people will like this change back to Grocery; plus, the Grocery has a higher $12,000 limit. Hopefully this offer will become available via referrals soon as well.
Keep in mind while these cards talk about cash back you actually earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points. This means if you have an annual fee card such as Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Ink Plus or Chase Ink Preferred then you can transfer these points to travel partners. You could also use these points for the Chase Pay Yourself back feature to make them worth 1.5¢ each.
Unfortunately a lot of readers won’t be eligible for these cards/bonus due to the Chase 5/24 rule. We will still be adding this to our list of the best credit card bonuses.
There’s also an alternative bonus option for the Freedom Unlimited card to get a bonus 1.5% back on up to $20,000 in spend everywhere during the first year. That’s 30,000 bonus points if maxed out.
Hat tip to MtM
Got the $200 bonus + 5% gas and grocery store offer when I visited my local Chase branch (8/22/24)
5% additional bonus on gas and grocery is gone. Now it is back to regular $200 sign up bonus.
A month later and it’s still listed on the best credit card pages erroneously.

Does this stack with the quarterly bonus? So would it be 10x points on groceries this quarter for the freedom flex?
Just got approved for the Freedom Flex. Gas and groceries for the next 12 months. And I love it.
They pulled from Experian, my score was 799 before the HP.
Credit limit is $12,900.
Also got a hard pull on TransUnion. I thought Cap One was the only issuer to pull from multiple credit agencies. Oh well…
Looks like it’s back for groceries and gas:
Earn a $200 bonus + 5% gas and grocery store offer
Earn a $200 bonus after you spend $500 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. Plus, earn 5% cash back on combined gas station and grocery store purchases (excluding Target and Walmart) on up to $12,000 spent in the first year.
Got it in incognito this morning (10/6/23)
I see gas and grocery also in P2’s referral link. Going to finally pull the trigger on the Flex for me.
I don’t see any bonus spend in regular or incognito
Chuck seems to be back to +6k on gas again
I still get Grocery incognito
Reward expired, dropped to $150 for $500 spend, and no grocery bonus on the public offer
Referrals still offer $200 for $500 spend though.
@chuck
The signup bonuses are still available and currently include “earn a $200 bonus plus 5% gas and grocery store offer”. It seems like the best one compared to all the previously offered since there is flexibility on which category you can be spending in and have rewarded with the credit card. In the past, I had to wait until the signup bonus was the “correct” category before I applied but this signup bonus is perfect for all people who had this credit card in mind.
It’s dead now. =|
