Our Verdict

This offer has been available for some time but it required matching, it’s nice to be able to apply for the bonus directly. There is also a 100,000 point offer available only to targeted accounts that you could try apply for (note the offer shows for everybody but when you click apply it won’t work for most people) or to get matched to, (this offer requires $2,000 spend instead of $1,000). The nice thing about this card is that it’s not subjected to the Chase 5/24 rule (although getting the card will stay count towards your total number of cards). The free night certificate that can be used on any property for $49 per year is also fantastic value.

Points are at their most valuable when you redeem them for properties on the PointsBreak list (all these hotels cost 5,000 per night), the downside to that is the quality of properties is usually low and the better ones book up quickly. I still think this is a card worth applying for and the same offer that required matching has been on our best credit card list for some time. As always before applying for this card or asking basic questions in the comments make sure you read these things everybody should know about Chase credit cards.

Unable to find the 80K offer. Been doing dummy bookings. Someone on flyertalk said I had to be platinum. But in order to be platinum I’d have to get the card. Unless I’m staying 40 nights per year in IHG, it’s a bit like the chicken and egg.

Any suggestions on how to get the 80K to show up?

I’ve also gotten goose egg when it comes to this. However, i did find in this link, a website showing the offer (but doesn’t work when you click apply) and if you read the comments, a user said they called Chase, and Chase confirmed they can match the offer after the user applies, if they take a screenshot of the 80,000 offer they are seeing.

here is the link:

I will wait for the 100k offer to come back. I should of apply September but I applied for the Merrill + and was thinking that two cards in one month would be too much. But turns out I didnt have any problem to make the 3000K for the Merrill and now I regret I didnt apply and for the IHG one. Hopefully will come back soon.
Just a general question can you accumulate those free nights that you get each year or you will lose it if you dont use it same year you got it?
Also someone said the points are not worth that much? So with 100k points you get around 5 nights worth about 90$ per night?

I applied for the 80,000 offer and was matched to 100k as one of the first ones. 100k got me 3 nights by the Kentucky Derby at $900/ night. It will depend on the rate but I looked at a few options before booking seems most hotels are between 20k – 35k a night.

Doc,

Unless I am missing something, all the hotels on the 5000 PointsBreak list are not 5000 points. They are 5000 points plus some amount of cash, 10000 plus less cash, and at 15000 to 20000 points they are fully paid on the few that I checked. To be fair, I randomly selected only a few stateside hotels on various dates in locations I could see myself going, but I did not see the results I was hoping to see based on your description of the list. That makes the 80000 points worth about $400 or less in hotel stays, if I get lucky and if they have a pointsbreak hotel where I want to go, during a quarter I want to be there, and if it’s not sold out. That’s a lot of if’s. (Honestly not sure if other hotels not on the list accept these points because it didn’t show up on a few properties I checked outside the “pointsbreak” list.) Based on the redemption website, another option is $200 in Lowes/Home Depot/Target gift cards. Given I only did $1000 in spend to get the 80K bonus, not terrible, but not great either.

DP: IHG MasterCard Applied/Approved 8/8, requested expedited shipping of CC, $1K spend by 8/14. Paid off balance on 8/14. 80K Points posted 8/28 – available for use. Thanks Chase!

I was definitely using the points break list. I was picking a couple hypothetical places I would stay on that list. I used dates within the booking quarter. They were definitely not coming up as 5,000.

Not unusual, if the Pointbreak rooms have sold out prior to booking.

Applied for the card on July 23rd (with 80K offer) and SM’ed Chase to be upgraded to the 100K offer on July 29th (after reading about it on DOC). At that time I was advised to meet the spending requirements for the first offer and then to get back to them. Today I SM’ed Chase again to ask for the 100K offer since i met the $2K requirements and they responded right away saying that I will see the 20K credit on my next statement. 🙂
Thank you DOC!!

Regarding authorized users on this card. I have not done this in the past so my wife can hover around 5/24. However, I saw something about you can add anyone as an authorized user like a pet any made up name to get the bonus. Any rules around this?
