The Offer
- Get $.35 gas discount at Shell per gallon on up to 20 gallons with Chase Pay
Here’s how to go about doing this offer: Add your Shell Fuel Rewards loyalty card to your Chase Pay app, then fill-up at least 5 gallons without any special discount, then you’ll get $.35 off per gallon on your second fill-up.
The Fine Print
- Offer ends 12/31/18
- $.35 savings is one-time only
- Limit 20 gallons
Our Verdict
Maximum benefit from this deal is $7 if you fill-up a full 20 gallons. Some people use Shell with Fuel Rewards regularly for their $.15 grocery bonus or Giant/SS/Martins earnings. You can also get $.05 off per gallon with Gold status, and all Freedom and Sapphire cardholders can get that instantly now.
Hat tip to SD
Turns our the 35 cent discount worked differently than I expected.
I registered the offer to my Fuel Rewards card a few months back as DoC instructed above. I made a Chase Pay activity in store, but that did not trigger
the discount.
I reread the instructions and did a Chase Pay at the pump a couple of weeks ago. That did not give me the discount at that time, but did count as the qualifying purchase.
My next visit at Shell, I used a card not issued by Chase, but the 30 cent discount was applied anyway. Much to my displeasure since I was saving that for a future Chase Pay purchase event.
Finally went to get my 5 gallon fill up today and got .15/gallon off instead of .5/gallon. Turns out there’s an extra .10/gallon off until 08/01/2018 for your first Gold fill up.
Shell wants $2.99 for regular/unleaded in my area, whereas Speedway is $2.35 and Mobil is $2.45 … The silly .35 promotion won’t help at all here..
My phone wouldn’t find any participating gas stations while parked in front of the pump at my local Shell station. I went inside and asked the attendant to scan my QR code from the Chase Pay app, and of course he had never seen it before and his little scanner didn’t do anything when he tried. It could be my gas station isn’t updated, but I am thinking it should have been able to be scanned if he knew what he was doing.
Not sure if this pay at pump is supposed to work via NFC. If so, my bargain Moto G4 phone does not have that NFC chip. I might try again with my old Droid with NFC and see if that changes things, but that’s a lot of work because I would also need to move my SIM, or be on Wi-Fi,
TL;DR: If your phone doesn’t have NFC, you’re probably out of luck.
Same case here. I am in Chicago and unable to get any Shell stations to come up in Nearby Gas Stations
I figured out that if you open up the Chase pay app you can view a map of participating merchants. Turns out not all Shell stations accept Chase pay.
Also, Chase pay doesn’t use NFC – my mistake.
How to add the loyalty card to the chase pay app?
Chase app found the shell station I was at. It asked for the pump number, so I was at pump 7, type in 7 and then it wouldn’t let me activate the pump.. weird… It did give me 2 pending shell transaction.. THe pump I was at did had a sticker with the chase pay logo.. So unsure what is wrong.. there was a line, so I didn’t want to stay too long
Hmmm. That brings down per gallon. Still cheaper at Costco by .70 cents at $3.05
Does this *have* to be used with pay at the pump? It gives instructions for it at the link but nothing in the T&C says it must be, just that we need to use Chase Pay. I’m hoping I can just go in and they can scan my phone.
ChasePay app isn’t finding a Shell station in the Atlanta area that allows pay at the pump. Ugh.
And I actually use Shell and Kroger for my gas.
My local shell gas price is 0.2$/gal cheaper when you pay with cash or shell gift card, given that chase pay requires a use of a chase credit card as the underlying payment method, this deal is effectively 0.15$/gal
