Our Verdict

Most recent offer was 50,000 miles after $3,000 in spend. This is an extra 15,000 miles but requires $7,000 more in spend, that’s only slightly more than 2x miles per $1 spent. We frequently see higher targeted offers, for example some people are currently targeted for 75,000 miles on the business cardAnother recent offer on the personal card is 50,000 + $100.  Keep in mind the Chase 5/24 rule applies to this card, so most readers will not be eligible. If you are eligible then you need to decide if it’s worth burning a 5/24 slot for this card or not. Given the new 48 month restrictions to Sapphire cards burning a spot seems like less of an issue.

I’m not loving the trend of slightly higher bonuses with much higher minimum spend requirements spread out over three or six months. As always if you have a question about Chase cards, read this post first as it’s probably answered there. I think a lot of people will prefer the straight 50,000/$3,000 offer but some may prefer this higher spend offer as it basically means you’re earning 3x+ united miles per $1 spent.

40000 points on $2000 spend and $100 statement credit is also available (Plus no annual fee for 1st year). I think this offer is better than the 40000 points on $2000 spend plus 15000 for $70000 of spend.

If 15000 points for additional $7000 spend is better than $100 statement credit please tell me why?

Damn, $10,000 for only 65,000 points that aren’t even transferable? No thanks.
I think Chase is starting to feel the pinch of their 5/24.

hey there. use credit karma to find out when you opened/closed cards.

Like most Chase cards: not available if you “received a new Cardmember bonus for this credit card within the last 24 months”. So you’ll need to be able to check when you last received a bonus on this card. If you don’t have records, figure it would’ve been within 4 months of opening the card (which you can find on credit karma, as k.m. says)

I just signed up for the 50k/3k offer 2 weeks ago. I know Chase will match offers if you applied within the last 90 days if I send an SM, but how will they handle the disparity in spending requirements? At what point do I send the SM- after I meet the MSR that I am currently signed up for, or sooner?

I matched the IHG Premier offer a few months ago. The SM said that the MSR needed to be met for the higher offer (i.e., my sign up offer was 80k/2k, matched offer was 100k/3k; I needed to spend 3k). It’s a different co-brand, so ymmv.

You can send the SM at any time as long as it’s within that 90 day window.

So I am in this exact same scenario. Emailed them as soon as saw this announced. Emailed them already and got a response. They said since my promo had a 50K/3k spend + $100 statement credit AND I already got that credit I couldn’t avail of that extra promo. But if I didn’t get the credit yet they would have switched it to that.

This happened in 2015, but I applied for the card under a 30k offer (I wasn’t churning yet, I got the card just because I expected to be flying United more) and then before the card even came I got a 50k offer mailer. I called to request a match to the 50k offer and they did raise the MSR on me too. IIRC they gave me 30k when I hit the original MSR and then the other 20k when I made up the $1k difference between the MSR for the two offers.

Spreading a higher minimum spend over longer periods of time for a better bonus is an obvious technique to build loyalty and reduce churning. I’m surprised we haven’t seen more lenders adopt this approach.

It makes sense from an issuer’s point. While it is harder to get the full amount I don’t mind it too much. They make more money and we still get the cards. Just slows the game down a little bit.

I agree, this is similar to Barclay’s approach on their DOA card except with the other lure of the 40k points after a smaller spend which will probably make this offer a winner.

The more I think about that Barclays card the more I’m baffled by their incompetence thinking their approach would work.
