Quick Note: I realize this offer has expired, but I think it’s worth posting regardless as Citi generally offers this as an ongoing “bonus” with different dates.
Citi frequently sends out targeted (and public) promotions for earning up to $500 with a qualifying deposit on their savings accounts. The issue I have with these bonuses is that they are somewhat confusing, let’s take a look at the most recent version of this offer:
A lot of people will read this advertisement and incorrectly assume that you’ll receive a bonus of $500 for depositing a minimum of $25,000 and maintaining that balance for 90 consecutive days. That’s a pretty great deal (2% return over 90 days). What you’re actually getting is 10x the normal interest rate that Citi offers. That sounds pretty good as well, doesn’t it? Let’s just check the interest rate Citi offers first on that Citibank Savings Plus account.
Best case scenario you get the 0.03% APY rate, 10x that is 0.3% APY. That’s still an awful rate, Citi! Over those 90 days people would earn under $20 in interest. I really hate these campaigns from Citi and I always do my best to warn readers about them, I think Citi should improve the wording and clearly display the abysmal rates they actually offer. As always you can view better savings accounts here & better savings bonuses here.
Wouldn’t this be covered under UDAAP regulation for “deceptive” offer?
Not a lawyer so not sure
What’s deceptive about it? It’s your own fault if your first question is not “10X what?” or “what do you mean up to?”.
thsnks for the warning. thatswhy i likethis website
it happen to me with their bonus promotion for preferred card.5bonus on all gas, grocery, transportation and drugstore.I ended up spending $1500 to find out in fine print up to $25 back…
I remember getting a mailer for a bank credit card that earned 5x points per dollar spent and a huge signup bonus on top! And the fine print said those points were worth like .2cpp
PNC or KeyBank I think it is, can’t remember! I got excited when I first saw that as well.
Yup, think it was PNC as I had an account with them at the time
Gollum: How precious! They steal it from us. Sneaky little hobbitses. Wicked, tricksy, false!
Smeagol: [shaking his head] No. Not master Citi!
Gollum: [snarling malevolently] Yes, precious, false! They will cheat you, hurt you, LIE!
“United” we stand.
Up to $500. Which means a phone call to Citi to find out EXACTLY what I would receive. People get too many $$$ signs in their eyes. It’s a little deceptive. As big as this bank is their rates are the chinciest.
CITI loves these phony tactics then wonder why they are losing customers. Shady bank
Just opened a Barclays Online Savings Account; APY: 1.00% 😏😀😏😜
Yes my brother actually fell for that and was asking me if he should do this over WF one. I’m glad he did ask me first though, sneaky citi…
