Citi Cracking Down On Matching Offers

Over the last few weeks/month a number of readers have reported it is becoming increasingly difficult to match sign up bonuses with Citi. Previously it was extremely easy and reps were even matching to targeted offers. The only real restriction was that they would only add a maximum of an extra 20,000 points.

It’s still possible to match, but some representatives are now requesting evidence of a physical mailer for targeted offers and other reps are outright refusing it. That’s not to say that everybody is running into these issues, just that it’s not as easy as it once was. For more information on matching with different credit card issuers, read this post.

Hat tip to Aaron M & other readers bringing this to my attention.

DP – So for those trying to match the AAdvantage Plat card offer to 60K if you took the 40K + the $250 credit, that still appears to be very much working. Both myself and P2 did that in the secure chat. No real questions asked as we both pointed them to the 60K available at citi.com

So if you do see a legitimate public offering, the match seems to work for that.

I did this too, but as of last week they say Yes via live chat, then you receive the “send front and back of targeted offer” letter. Per specialist CSR, even public offers won’t be match unless there is a mailer with your name and address on it.

I called for the AA personal and just got denied, even though I asked for the publicly available offer of 60K. I probably wouldn’t have applied if I’d known…

It’s not completely dead. I was just successful on a personal matching 60->65k. Seems like they are only matching now to available public offers, unless you were able to provide proof for a targeted one.

Citi doesn’t even pay out on its own offers; the most bogus big bank in the USA.

Denied twice from the 60k 3k spend offer to match for the 75k 3k spend offer or the 60k $250 offer. Requested in chat but got a letter asking for proof of offer.

I just matched a aa biz offer last week. Applied to the 40k+ $250 statement credit. Chatted requesting match to public 75k offer. Sent screenshot and they said once I met $5k spend I’d get the extra points.

that’s a new development – used to be able to match with the original/lower spend requirement (in your case $2K, I think). Still better than no match at all though

Ha funny enough I got a letter This week about asking for a match. I had recently chatted with a rep online and they said they’d be happy to match. Then I get a letter in the mail asking for proof of the offer

I’m okay with no more matching, as long as the train keeps running. 65k is good enough.

65k for 2k in spend is one transaction to GCM and like a net cost of 15 bucks for 65k miles. Pray it never ends.

Well, it was really great while it lasted, can’t get too upset about it. Nice run!

I still have not been denied, knock on wood, most recently last month. My process is never to reference a specific offer, but just say “my friend received an offer 15k higher than mine, can I be matched to that offer?”
