Citi released the 5% quarterly category for the third quarter of 2024 (activation required):
- Gas Stations – Useful for gas and also for buying gift cards inside some gas stations and similar convenience stores
- Excludes gasoline purchases at warehouse clubs, discount stores, convenience stores or other merchants that do not use the gas station merchant category code.
Citi is different than the other cards in that you have a $6,000 annual cap rather than a $1,500 quarterly cap. You can get 5% back on up to $6,000 in this quarter or you can save the entire amount for a different quarter, or you can use part up each quarter.

My apologies — I know this kind of question must get asked all the time.
But since we are a few days away from June 30, I am trying to figure out whether Citi goes by Date Posted or Date of Transaction for whether a purchase counts as being in a given quarter. I want to make a bunch of grocery purchases soon, but I am trying to find out if the weekend is safe to get the 5% bonus (Quarter 2) or if I need to make them all today.
I have a parallel question about Chase Freedom and its 5% categories.
You should be good to go on both making in-store purchases on Sunday. Online is a different story.
Overlap with Chase Freedom: Gas Stations, EV Charging, Select live entertainment, Movie Theaters.
When was this card closed to new accounts and all of you got grandfathered in on the offers?
This is weak, think I will try to max out the grocery category this month.
calwatch,
Did you miss the linked article that Chuck provided? That could be of use to some people…
Same problem I have whenever Discover or Citi is 5% on gas or digital wallet; more often or not I tend to get gas at Costco where only Visa is accepted. Q3 2023 all three (Dividend, Discover, Freedom) had gas at 5%, so of course, gas went on Discover (except Costco) or Freedom Visa (esp. at Costco). So if Freedom has 5% on gas Q3 2024 (or if I get a 5% Chase spend offer on my Amazon or any of my other 6 or so Visa cards), the Dividend is going to smell like socks for a while.
Chase points are easily worth more than 1 cent each.
Not if you don’t have a Sapphire card. For many people, its not worth it.
