Citi Files Trademark For ‘Citi Strata Select’

Citi has filed a trademark for ‘Citi Strata Select’. Earlier this year Citi launched the Citi Strata Premier (rebrand of the Citi Premier) after filing trademarks for Citi Strata Premier & Citi Strata Elite. It’s unclear if the Citi Strata Select would be a completely new product or a rebrand of an existing card.

The most likely option would be that this is a rebrand of the Citi Rewards+ card. This is backed up by this reddit post from a month ago citing the Select name and stating that the Rewards+ needs to be refreshed before the launch (I would have thought they would do both at the same time). The rewards+ card offers the following:

  • Get 10% Points Back when you redeem, up to the first 100,000 points redeemed per year
  • No annual fee
  • Card earns ThankYou points:
    • Earn 2x points on grocery and gas, up to $6,000 per year, then 1x
    • Earn 1x points on everything else
  • Round up feature which rounds up the amount of points earned to the nearest 10.
  • Bonus ThankYou Points are not available if you have received a new account bonus for a Citi Rewards+ account in the past 48 months.
  • Low intro rate on purchases and balance transfers
  • 3% foreign transaction fee

The only perk I want to see on the Citi Strata Select is the ability to transfer Citi TYPs to transfer partners with $0 annual fee. I literally don’t need any other card benefits.

I would think about Thankyou Preferred since it’s the only Thankyou card left.

I thought they removed all credit card protections a few years ago on no AF cards.

What about the 10% TYP kicker?

Probably the biggest reason DoC readers have the card. Free 10k pts a year for me.

That’s why I have it but it’s not listed in the bullets. Not sure if that means the refresh will lose it (prob not)

Which card is this, with the free 10k points a year?

why would they need to file a trademark for Citi Strata Select when (presumably) they already have a trademark for Strata? It’s not like Amex can make a Strata Select card, but they’re prohibited from a Strata card.

To cover their asses for all scenarios. It’s standard practice to trademark and patent everything.

Why are they taking cards with good names and giving them crap names?

Worst card naming strategy ever!

If you’re going to try something different, at least make it so that it’s coherent to the general public. Bonvoy, Bevy, Brilliant, Boundless, Bold. Which one is better? Who knows? The words are neutral so it’s hard to gauge progression. Could have gone with Mouse, Rat, Guinea Pig, Opossum. Still weird, but at least I’d know which one was higher-tiered.

It follow’s Citi’s strategy with their card art: progressively gets worse with each iteration. Just look at the Citi Premier circa 2020 vs 2022 vs 2024.
