- Shell discounts:
- Sign up offer 30¢ off per gallon (up to 20 gallons) on your first 5 Shell fuel purchases
- 10¢ off per gallon as an ongoing offer.
- Really the card gives you an extra 25/5¢ off per gallon and also gives you gold status that gives you a further 5¢ off.
- Rebates:
- 10% Shell rebates on your first $1,200 Shell non-fuel purchases
- 2% Shell rebates on on your first $10,000 dining and grocery purchases per year (Mastercard only)
- 1% Shell rebates on other qualifying purchases
Our Verdict
The sign up bonus is worth a maximum of $30, not exactly amazing. The extra 10¢ off per gallon is OK, but you are far better off putting it on another credit card that earns 5% cash back on all gas purchases as that’s a better return and doesn’t lock you into using Shell (more expensive in some areas). Overall I wouldn’t recommend anybody sign up for this card.
Hat tip to reader Patrick K
Like the poster above, I purchase Shell gift cards at discounts, which allows me to get cash price at the pump. What I’m curious about is if you sign up for this card if the extra 10 cents off per gallon is tied to your Fuel Rewards account just for having the card, or if you actually have to use the card in order to get the ten cents per gallon benefit.
Shell is hard to find, and usually the most expensive in Philly and NJ, but for some road trips there might be some value, like DE. Some value, but if it’s subject to the Citi rule about multiple cards, this would not make the priority list.
You’d “shell” out money in the long run. Sorry I had to say it.
When is S&S’s next round of 2X fuel points on MCGC purchase? $0.3 X 20 X 5=$30, reminds me the Walmart soda as sign up bonus a few years back.
Wouldn’t count on Citi honoring their bonus offer…
never had an issue with citi’s sign up bonus. just sharing my dp. 4 cards w/ them.
You actually have to meet the Minimum Spend Requirement to get the bonus. Citi won’t just give it to you for just opening the card.
Although this one does give you the discounts just for signing up.
My parents swear by their BP card. They talk about how much they save on gas not understanding that like $5000 spend a month on any other card would save them more than a few tanks of gas. I imagine this card will interest them. Hey guys get a CSP you will get $600 back in just half a month of what you spend… no our credit score, our credit score! 🙂
I buy Shell gas, but buy Shell GIft Cards at Staples with my Ink Card. 5% UR points end up being worth at least 7.5% of purchase price.
This must be Citi’s “luxury card” competitor to Chase Starbucks. lol
No, this card would need a $49 AF to compete with that one.
