Citi Now Allowing Product Changes Via Chat Due To COVID-19

Citi used to required cardholders to call in if they wanted to product change their credit card. That requirement has now been removed and it’s possible to simply use the live chat function to product change to a different card. Citi has extremely generous rules when it comes to product changes compared to other card issuers. They are as follows:

  • Card must be at least twelve months old before downgrading
  • Conversions can take up to 51 days (this is usually done much sooner)
  • Some representatives will say that product changes must be done within the same product family, this isn’t the case. Simply end the call (or chat in this case) and try another representative.

I was refused by 2 operators to do a product change or account closure. Was informed that they can’t discuss my accounts over chat for security reasons.
Seems to no longer be working via chat.

they might have stopped allowing this. I have tried to do a PC over chat with 2 different agents and they told me to call.
“Sorry for the inconvenience as per the latest update, only a conversion specialist will be able to do conversion on the account.”

If it takes 51 days for the conversion- what happens to the annual fee you are trying to avoid? For instance, the annueal fee on my Premier just posted, so I am looking into downgrading it to either a DoubleCash or Rewards+. But if it takes 51 days, I will be over the 30-day limit to get the annual fee refunded. Does that mean I am forced to pay the $95 fee and there’s nothing I can do to avoid it?

You will get the full fee refunded. I didn’t know this was a new thing when last week I used the chat feature to product change the Prestige to Double Cash. I previously confirmed via chat there were no retention offers so I cleared my ThankYou points prior to the conversion. Anyway, the rep advised me of the 51-day spiel and I asked if my full fee will be refunded, and he confirmed yes and gave me a specific date it will be refunded. There are a series of confirmations you have to make for them to proceed with the conversion, so if you have questions along the way you can ask them, or just back out if you’re not comfortable.

I downgraded my AA via chat weeks ago. It was pretty smooth.

Can you PC an AA card to a Double Cash/2% card? Or a no go on that?

They would not allow a product change from rewards plus to dividend. Not sure when that change occurred. Sucks since I got the rewards+ a year ago in the hopes of PCing to dividend.

That change occurred in early 2019. No one has been able to PC into a Dividend since then.

This is how I did mine last month. PC from Rewards + to Double Cash. New card arrived exactly 7 days later and the conversion was completed.
