Citi Partners With Mastercard To Offer ‘True Name’ Feature

In June 2019 Mastercard announced a new program called ‘True Name‘, this allows transgender and non-binary people to change the name on their credit, debit or prepaid card to reflect their true identity. Today Citi has announced that Citi cardholders will be able to use this new feature effectively immediately to request a new card, which displays their chosen identity. In the coming weeks customers will also be able to be serviced by their chosen name when calling customer service and on mobile/online.

Feel free to discuss this in the comments below, remember if you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all.

I love to see all the positive comments! I am literally in the process of assisting a family member with a legal name change as well as birth certificate gender marker change—and let me tell you it is a process, months and months and several hundred dollars but so worth it for those effected. A simple name on a card in their wallet can be hugely affirming to them.

Thank you to those showing support and to those on the other side, think about the issues in your life that a little understanding could improve your outlook and hopefully you will decide to act and speak with more empathy

All the talk about how it could cause problems for folks whose IDs won’t match or saying “just go to court and get your name legally changed”… just let people live, y’all. Generally, most card purchases aren’t made by handing the card over to a cashier anymore, so that makes the matching ID argument kinda moot. Additionally, legal name changes often cost time and money that some folks don’t have. What Citi and MC are doing here is a simple way for folks who need it to have their chosen name reflected and affirmed on their cards, eliminating one more place that they still have to see their deadname.

Why would you assume my gender based on my name? Cannot I self-identify as a female and still would rather be called Michael?

Sux I cancelled my Citi cards. I could have been swayed at retention for identifying as a jar of mayo if this was offered!

I see problems when trying to match up a drivers license (which lists your legal name) with a credit card that has a different one.

That said, maybe I’ll change mine to Mxyzptlk and watch people squirm to pronounce it.

Now make name changes eligible for repeat bank bonuses. It’s the woke thing to do.

Give a whole new meaning to “Get Woke, Go Broke” for these counter-culture, altruistic banksters. Loved Citigroup’s cabinet recommendations for Obama, can’t wait to see who they pick for Biden! Pacify me more, papi.

Why can one not just request an AU card with whatever name they want on it? My dog has a card, my rock has a card and etc…
