sometimes pfd holders get spending offers with bonus pts targetted to them. so one slight reason to have/keep the card….but the offers are weak tea compared to the other citi cards one might carry

The Preferred earned 2x on entertainment before. I wonder what the difference is for “live entertainment”.
Still, surprised to see Citi is still making changes to this card. The Double Cash gives the 2x back on everything.

The TYP already had 2% on Entertainment.

Now it will have *only* live entertainment.

What do you mean “the TYP”? That is ambiguous. It can stand for Thank You Points, Thank You Preferred, Thank You Prestige, or Thank You Premier. (You likely meant the last one.) It’s therefore a useless abbreviation, since it doesn’t name any specific card.

What other card could OP be referring to on an article LITERALLY about the Citi ThankYou Preferred. The Citi TY Preferred gives 2x back on all entertainment, and it will change to only live entertainment next year. No one mentioned the Citi ThankYou Premier.

No, it’s the Citi ThankYou Premier ($95 AF) that currently gives 2x on all entertainment. The Citi Preferred (“discontinued” $0 AF card) is getting 2x on live as a NEW benefit (see the post at the top of this page)

And the post at the top of this page has a link to the Premier post. So it was mentioned.

The Premier is changing from 2x on all entertainment to 2x only on live entertainment. The Preferred never had an earning bonus for entertainment before.

2 typ/$2? So 1 typ/$1?

Double cash is still better

Why is Citi adding new earning categories to a card they no longer accept applications for? I’m aware you can PC to it, but I’m just wondering — does anyone think this might mean they’re going to allow people to apply for it once again?

Agree it is odd. But sometimes Citi does odd things with cards after they stop applications. The AT&T Access More card is not available for new applications or product changes, yet people seem to get excellent retention bonuses. If you are trying to kill a product, why entice people to keep it?

What I cannot figure out, though, is why would someone choose this card over a Double Cash card, if given the option. They could add another five 2x categories to the Preferred, but it will not be as good as 2x on all purchases. Is there any advantage? Does the Preferred have extended warranty protection? I know they cut that from DC but left it on many other products.

If PCing from a Thank You card with accumulated points, choosing the Preferred will keep TY points alive. The DC is not considered a Thank You card so PCing to the DC would start a 60 day clock on point expiration.

Ahh, good point Mike.

Can you still PC to the Preferred? The Preferred was not replaced by the DC, the Preferred was replaced by the Rewards+. PCing to the Rewards+ is the “current” way of keeping TY points alive while PCing to a no-AF card AFAIK.

You can PC to the Preferred. I called 2 days ago to try to get a retention offer on my Premier. They offered to downgrade me to the Preferred.
