Citi has announced that the planned enhancement to their Premier card went live on June 2nd instead of the scheduled launch of August 23rd.
Citi had previously announced adding 3x categories to the Premier card in the following categories:
- Supermarkets
- Restaurants (including takeout)
Previously this had been slated to go live on August 23rd, but they have now expedited these category additions in light of COVID-19. The Citi Premier signup pages are still showing the August 23rd start date, but apparently Citi sent out to various media contacts that this will go live early. Presumably cardholders will get notification of this in the coming days as well. Update: Not applying to new cardholders currently.
The grocery seems to earn 1x again for my purchases made on July 20th and 23rd after earning 3x for almost 2months. Not sure if it only applied to specific cards or to all the premier cards. Any additional DP?
Any confirmation that this applies to new applicants? The signup page still shows August 23.
Just a followup to my post below, where I relayed that I made a restaurant purchase on June 5 and only got 2x points. I spoke with a Citibank agent today and she confirmed that the change mentioned at the various media outlets has not yet occurred — which is why I only got 2x points. The agent got her supervisor involved and they researched it thoroughly. They acknowledged that there were news stories out there mentioning the June 2 date but it has not yet gone into effect — at least as far as restaurants go.
Just an FYI.
I plan to downgrade my prestige to the premier because I still have TY points that I may want to transfer to airline miles. Should I apply to a new premier card first before I downgrade the prestige card? Can i have 2 premier cards?
Has anyone tested this for a restaurant purchase made on or after June 3rd? I made a purchase at a takeout Chinese restaurant on June 5. I looked today (June 9) and I was only given the 2x points, not 3x.
Does DoC have links or any other documentation to support the claim that this change went live on June 2? It looks like we have my test case for restaurants and Nick’s test for grocery stores where the purported change appears not to be live.
John John I can confirm that grocery is earning 3X. Purchased 4 VGCs this weekend, 3X points posted for each one of them.
Did anyone test this? My “Merchandise – Grocery, Supermarket” category purchase on 6/4 received 1x. Cmon Citi
Nick it shows 3x points for me.
Same here….the system shows “Merchandise – Grocery, Supermarket” and only got 1X TYP
My next question is – did they also push up the change to the travel earning, where travel such as tolls, timeshares, etc., no longer earns 3%?
Nice that they bumped up the date. I have the Prestige, Premier, Double Cash, and Rewards+. Dropping the Prestige when the AF comes due unless I get a worthwhile retention offer.
Still cancelling the Citi Premier. Basically signup bonus fodder with the benefits removal.
3x grocery has its value if PRG is maxed outt. Otherwise I agree its no good
The only card i can think of that has no forex fees and bonuses groceries and gas outside of the US. CSR does groceries now but that is temporary. This is big for me as we usually rent houses abroad and largest spend tends to be in supermarkets, where i would usually just use a 2% Penfed card
Agreed, grocery and gas categories outside the US are too rare. Premier fills a niche for people living along the Canadian/Mexican borders, expats, foreign exchange students, etc. US Bank Altitude Reserve mobile payment category does cover a lot of these scenarios, though.
Yep, signup bonus fodder, but it could help a little having better cash back while meeting that minimum spend.
Little to no value for me when factoring in the annual fee. And a hassle to use Thankyou rewards. Will cancel absent significant retention offer. My two cents FWIW
