[Expired] Citi Prestige: Earn 5x Points For Online Purchases Through August 31 (Max 7,500)

Deal has ended, view more Citi Prestige deals by clicking here.

Update 6/27/20: Now confirmed Plastiq is working.

The Offer

(Direct Link needed)

  • Citi is offering 5x points per dollar spent on the Prestige card through August 31st.

Sample purchases that will count:

  • Retailer website orders
  • Online grocery orders
  • Online drugstore orders

The Fine Print

  • Valid for all cardholders whose Prestige cards were opened since May 22nd (not valid for new cardholders whose accounts are opened from May 23rd and beyond)
  • Limit 7,500 total points can be earned
  • Valid June 4 (as I understand) through August 31st.

Our Verdict

The only major COVID enhancement Citi announced on the Prestige card until now was to make it much easier to use the $250 travel credit. This bonus spend offer is a nice little addition (albeit somewhat underwhelming).

If you aren’t sure whether a given merchant will code as ‘online order’, you can check out our Payments Workshop and see which merchants code as online for the AT&T credit card (use key word: ATTcc); it’s likely that what works there will work here as well. It’s now confirmed that Plastiq is working.

These changes have not yet been sent out to cardholders, but it’s being reported by Travelingformiles, apparently based on what they received from the Citi media team (? wish blogs would make sourcing clearer). From what I gather, this is a public offer valid for all Prestige cardholders, presumably the info will get sent out to them in the coming days.

Probably too late now as its past tax-day but paying my Indiana taxes triggered the 5X.

Appears to be allowing over 7,500 points. I had 3 purchases totaling 1,903 points and then a plastiq mortgage payment that just gave 6,720 more for total of 8,623.

Either they are giving all of the points of the purchase that puts you over or at 7,500 OR there is no limit. I’ll need to make another online purchase to confirm.

Also curious if a restaurant purchase made online is pulling 5x from restaurant or out of the online category. If that’s the case, I’m way over 8,623 for online.

This seems broader than the online category under B of A Travel Rewards card. I used Citi Prestige to pay my Verizon Prepaid account, and I earned 5x.

Anybody think Airbnb would count?

Am I correct that I can combine the two Prestige offers for an online grocery store purchase, such as through Safeway or Whole Foods? That is, I would get 5x points and I can use the travel credit to pay for the purchase? If that’s the case, could I purchase a gift card from the grocery store and make this work? Sorry if this is an obvious one….it’s not to me.

Answering my own question after struggling a bit with Citi to reach someone who understood the question. The agent said that ordering online from grocery stores would almost certainly not code as online.

Would a giftcard purchase from Amazon, Staples.com, Giftcardmall or any online retailer trigger this 5x does anyone know?

7500 is not enough…I have already used up the quota.

Shouldn’t this read “Citi Prestige cardholders who had open accounts as of 22 May 2020 ” rather than “cardholders whose Prestige cards were opened since May 22nd”?

The former is how it’s phrased on Traveling for Miles.

If it were for people who opened accounts since May 22 but not for cardholders who opened on May 23 – the way it reads now – there is literally no day which meets both conditions. Or am I missing something?

Thanks for posting it, either way.
