Citi Refunding The Annual Fee Of Some Citi Premier Cardholders For No Apparent Reason

In the last two days I’ve received e-mails from readers stating that Citi has refunded the annual fee on their Citi Premier card. The line item shows up as ‘refund membership fee’ and the full $95 is refunded (see below).

In all cases the cards are still open and the refund was posted on March 30th. Neither myself or the readers involved know why this refund was offered and Citi has provided no explanation either. If you have a Citi Premier it might be worth checking your account to see if this has happened to you. If anybody has any theories on why this has happened, let us know in the comments below.

So i called Chase, i have Chase business Ink card for last 8+ years now. They added $95 annual fee on my small woman owned business on April 1st. I called Chase and spoke to customer service rep (after holding the line for 63 minutes) i requested to waive annual fee as a gesture during this tough time.

What did chase say?

They basically showed me middle finger and said I can close my account but there will be no waiver of fee.

Annual fee posted March 6th, downgraded to Rewards+ 10 days ago. Still no refund, had to pay the statement with the fee as the due date is today.

Not an April Fool’s, my Premier shows an annual refund on 3/30. Maybe for something similar that Chase did? Admittedly I was going to downgrade in November when my annual fee hits to a DC. But since they did this, I think I will keep it another year and pay when it hits.

when did your AF hit, in relationship to when the refund was posted? i.e. AF posted on Feb statement, then refund on March statement? And when is your statement close date in relationship to when the refund posted? Curious because my AF just posted, wondering if refund will post next statement. Thx for the DP

My 2 years old Premier got hit by annual fee a week ago and no refund 🙁
Relatively heavy spender, so maybe they are refunding to people with lower spend.

No refund for me either. I was charged the annual fee back in March (a month ago). I’ve had my Citi Premier for 2 years.

I called Citi yesterday requesting a refund for the annual fee. Customer service representative did not issue a refund but provided a special offer of a $95 statement credit if I spend $95 within a month. I pounced on the offer. Now I just need to wait until I need to spend $95…

That’s a great retention offer!

I had to spend $1k for three consecutive months to get my $95 credit (plus 1000 ty points) last fall. Ended up working out really well though as they ran a 5x promo and a no interest promo during those three months.

Nothing.

My card is a few months old.

IIRC I think I read on DOC that people have been able to get 10K TYP easily as a retention bonus – only picked up the Premier last summer so havnt tried for offer personally -yet.

But did get Citi to refund AF on AA Biz card last month.
