Our Verdict
Some people have the option to cashout Citi TYP at 1¢, if you’re going to do that then this is better value. We saw 15% a few days ago, and readers wisely advised us to wait until Cyber Monday for 20%. It’s not all of the same brands, but some are the same. Personally, I’ll buy some Apple gift cards at 20% off.
Can I expect another event like this anytime soon, or will I have to wait until next BF/CM? If so I’ll probably just take one of the 10% deals they currently have.
Is this ending on midnight EST or PST? I am on west coast time zone, but I dont see any discount as of 11:20pm 11/27/2023.
It always ends on EST just for future reference
Chuck These do get the 10% back on points used if you have a linked rewards+ card. Effectively making it 28% discount or 1.39 cents per point.
Can I buy and apply a large amount (>$1000) of apple gift cards to a single order? Looking at a laptop for my wife’s Christmas, would be nice to cash out my typ at a good rate
Yes. Apple accepts up to 8 gift cards in a single order on the website (fewer on the app). But you can do as many as you want by loading them to your Apple account via the app store. As long as you use the same Apple ID to checkout on the hardware store, your full balance can be redeemed towards your purchase.
There are reports of Apple physical stores refusing to accept balance, citing fraud issues.
$200 max
I think you meant $2,000 max
Keep in mind earning TY points from Citi Checking accounts ends in 2024, so if you have any banking points in your account, this is a great opportunity to zero them out, especially since they expire and can’t be transferred to airlines.
One thing strange I noticed. On my husband’s account, Apple card denominations below $100 were priced at a higher rate ($100 was 8k points, but $50 was 4,800, $25 was ~3k). All represented a 20% discount from “normal”, but the normal price shown on the lower denominations was proportionally higher. On my account (CPC if that makes a difference), all denominations are 20% off a normal 1 TY=.01 rate ($100 is 8k, $50 is 4k, $25 is 2k). Make sure to check the redemption rates before you add to cart!
Great suggestion!
Did you receive any communication with a concrete date for Citi checking TY points expiry ?
I saw the message that big changes are coming to Citi checking in 2024 but no date.
I think Citi will not just expire those TY points without sufficient notification period.
Also, if someone is not into Apple cant Citi checking TY points be merged with Citi credit card TY points ?
Existing points earned through the end of this year will expire under their normal terms, I can see that already in my account, I think it’s 3 years. You just won’t earn any new ones starting next year.
Bank points can be merged with your other TY points, but they cannot be used to transfer to mileage partners. Basically every time you transfer points from a merged account to an airline, it will skip over the banking-earned points. Bank points can only be redeemed towards gift cards or other cash equivalents. You can leave them in there as long as you like until they expire, but I don’t think we ever see opportunities to cash out bank points at a better value than this. Given you’re not going to be adding to that stash after December, it’s a good opportunity to just clear them out.
The points earned from backing cannot be transferred, I have some expiring so will be taking advantage of this one. TY
Is there an expiration date or is this only temporary?
11/27, in the title.
This makes it 4 years in a row (2020-2023) with the 15% BF and 20% CM.
Probably safe to expect this again next year if there’s another 15% BF sale.
what is BF and CM?
Black Friday, Cyber Monday.
Remember with Points Sharing you can combine points from different cards (even from P2/P3) to squeeze out one more gc
Can you use Apple gift card to purchase apple fitness or tv subscription?
My AppleMusic and appleTV subscription takes money out of the credits I funded through a gift card, so I would assume apple fitness would too
