I have a bunch of LifeMiles that I can’t figure out how to use. There’s either no availabilty or it shows a crazy miles + cash option that is almost as expensive as paying full price. Even worse is that these expire if there’s no activity for a year.
I just paid to buy some miles to extend them, but I don’t know what to do with them.

Buyer beware that these transfers are also no longer instant. It now takes 8-24 hours for the points to become active and bookable. Confirmed personally with transfers from both Amex and Citi a few days ago, and asking customer support why I couldn’t book despite seeing the points in my account activity.

Did you try booking? The points show up instantly but can’t be used to book, as per Morris

There are some good redemption. I got a 20k United flight WAS-LON for Memorial day and a return ticket on Brussels Air for 65k business class flat bed in July. Inside of Colombia, I was able to snag Bogota- Cartagena-Bogota for 2200 lifemiles each leg. But there are still issues where they block your account and cancel your ticket when they “suspect” fraud and you have to wait for maybe two weeks and many emails as they won’t reinstate your account over the phone. The usual problem is that when you go to pay for the tax and they decline your American credit card even though the credit card is valid and the credit card company says there was no charge attempted. You can try again with another credit card but if you do that more than two times, and even if they issue a ticket, you may get an email canceling the ticket. By the time you are able to get back in to your account the travel date may have passed or the fare you wanted is gone.

I have found it much harder to use Lifemiles for domestic travel on United lately compared to before the pandemic. Very limited availability. Speculative transfers are usually a bad idea, but I would particularly advise against doing one here.
