Citi ThankYou Points Can Be Redeemed For A Gas Purchase At Shell, BP, and Amoco stations (0.8¢ Per Point)

Update 4/26/22: A lot of people (1, 2, 3) are having issues with this new ‘feature’. Annoying that it can’t be turned off.

Citi has announced that Citi ThankYou points will be able to be redeemed for gas at Shell, BP, and Amoco stations. Points can be redeemed by:

  • Visiting a participating Shell, BP, and Amoco fuel station
  • Swiping an eligible Citi credit card to pay for gas at both self and full service stations
    • If the gas pump screen prompts an offer to redeem ThankYou Points, select “yes” to use points for gas purchases
  • Confirming the number of points redeemed via the receipt or online at ThankYou.com

Points are worth a flat 0.8¢ when using this feature. Citi seems to have an obsession with offering new redemption options where cardholders can cash out points for less than 1¢ per point (e.g Pay With Points & PayPal)

Sounds like they realized the card is too good and are trying to make life confusing for people who decide to dedicate the card to some particularly common categories (like gas).
In which case, I have to wonder if they’re regretting making the card, and whether the writing might be on the wall for it…

I guess they need to try and make breakage somehow

How are there comments dated 2020 on a post dated yesterday?

Since the “UPDATE” line has the date of the update, having the date in the byline of the post change serves no purpose and is actually harmful.

William Charles The title is misleading. This isn’t a discount at all if you are losing 20% of the point value.

I switched it from ‘discount’ to ‘purchase’

It is a good thing I don’t drive much as I am working from home.
And I either fill up the car at QuickChek or a no-name brand nearby.

This post is useful because it lets people know to not redeem at gas pumps. As if gas is not already overpriced right now, Citi now wants you to lose 20% of the value of your points to use them at the pump. I sometimes wonder how they get away with this, but then I remember the George Carlin saying, “Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.”

It is the trickery that is despicable.
If you find this abhorrent, write a letter to

I think I’m gonna do this just so I could be part of the inevitable class action lawsuit

Hopefully in the near future Amazon Gas will offer 20% off at the pump when redeeming 1 TYP…

I am a fan of Citi’s DC + Premier combo, derive a lot of value from it, but I hate how they’re trying to take advantage of folks by trying to get them to use their points at poor redemption rates.

Those non optimizers are what subsidize the power of that DC+Premier combo, esp if you get a fee waiver on the latter.

Wonder how many premier holders will accidentally use their TY points when swiping that card for gas

I think I saw someone complaining about doing it accidentally recently…so probably quite a few, even if unknowingly.

My son who is an authorized user got “tricked” at the pump when the screen offered savings of $0.50/gallon just by touching “Yes” to authorize TYP to pay for part of transaction. End result: lost 689 TYP and “saved” $5.51. Terrible redemption rate of 0.8 cent per point. Told him not to do it again.
