Update 1/9/25: Extended to 7/7/25
Update 10/11/24: Deal is back until 1/7/25.
Update 7/9/24: Extended until 10/8/24
Update 1/10/24: Deal is back, $200 and $1,000 bonuses not available this time and $2,000 bonus is now $2,500. Churn period is now 365 days instead of 180.
Update 7/24/23: Deal is back and good through 1/9/24.
Update 4/10/23: Deal has been extended until 7/23/23. As there seems to be no return of the better bonuses and Citi churning clock resets every 180 days after account closing we will add this to the best bank bonuses.
Update 1/10/23: Extended until 4/4/23.

Our Verdict
Ideally you’d deposit your funds in the account as close to the 20 day period as possible and then withdraw shortly after the 60th day. Realistically you’ll probably need the funds in there for a minimum of 65-70 days if not longer. Rates for citi vary from 0.05% – 0.15% APY depending on the account package opened.
You really need to think of this as a savings bonus and compared it to high yield savings rates. For example if you put $300,000 into a 1% account you’d earn $530+ in a 65 day period. But if it was in a 4% account you’d earn $2,120 (more than the bonus on offer). The bonus actually scales and gets worse as it gets bigger. Reader Mark E put together this APY table based on a 70 day hold period:
$10,000/$200 Tier = ~10.4% APYnot currently available- $30,000/$500 Tier = ~8.65% APY
- $75,000/$1,000 Tier = ~6.93% APY
- $200,000/$1,500 Tier = ~3.9% APY
- $300,000/$2,000 Tier = ~3.46% APY

Does anyone have updated guidance about the definition of a “new checking customer”? I just checked the fine print today and the language about “did not have an account within the last 180 days” is not there.
It’s 365 days; not 180.

Look around for a link that says “Offer, Product & Pricing Information” to see the details.

“So long as you have not owned a Citi checking account in the last 365 days, meet Tax Requirements, and are at least 18 years old, you can apply to participate in the Welcome Checking Cash Bonus Offer.”
I waited a bit too long and missed the 45 day window to deposit. Would it be worthwhile to give them a call instead of closing the account?
Are you going to trust the info they give you? CSR’s are horrible at promotion questions. I’d chalk it up as a lesson learned, give up by closing the account, and start over next year. (366 days from your new closure date)

I’ve been trying for the $750 for 30k but the “open account” link always leads to a popup of:
“Something went wrong
We apologize for the inconvenience, but we’re experiencing technical problems.
Please try again later. For assistance opening account, visit your local Citibank branch or contact us at 1-800-374-9500. We accept 711 or other Relay Service.”
Still not working for NJ zip as of 4/1/25.
The promo savings rate(4.3%) for first 90 days was extended to 6/30/25 which is nice.
The link appears to work and takes you to start the application on safari(mobile)
The offer is $750 for 30k, $1500 for 200k if your residential/home address is in NY, CT, NJ, DC, VA, MD, CA, or NV
“Only certain Checking Accounts qualify. “Checking Accounts” must be opened via phone, on citi.com, or the Citi Mobile® App using a residential/home (not mailing) address at the time you apply for your account in an Eligible Location. “Eligible Locations” include AA, AE, AK, AL, AP, AR, AS, AZ, CO, DE, GA, GU, HI, IA, ID, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, ME, MI, MN, MO, MP, MS, MT, NC, ND, NE, NH, NM, OH, OK, OR, PA, PR, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VI, VT, WA, WI, WV, WY and select markets in Florida and Illinois.”
The states you said are not eligible
There are separate promos for different states.
or WA
Using NJ zip, when you try to apply for the relationship tier($30k for $750 bonus) you are asked if you want to open a linked savings account at the same time, and it explicitly states “Your linked savings balance will count towards unlocking your cash bonus”
Terms for Citi savings also say: “During the Offer Period, New Citi Savings accounts opened online or in a physical branch will receive the Promotional Interest Rate of 4.35% if they fulfill the Required Activities. The Minimum Balance to earn APY and the Promotional Interest Rate during the Promotional Rate Period is $25,000”
The Required Activities are: “Deposit at least the “Minimum Balance” in New-to-Citibank Funds into your New Citi Savings account within 10 Business Days after account opening. We will check your “On Deposit” balance in New-to-Citibank Funds on the 11th Business Day after you open your New Citi Savings account to determine if you meet the Minimum Balance and will continue to earn the Promotional Interest Rate.”
So seemingly in one of the shorter list of states this is the deal:
-Open a priority package w/ savings
-Deposit $30k by day 10 into savings. That triggers 4.35% and the $750 bonus as well
-Keep $30k for 90 days from opening. (Usually you have 45 days to get up to $30k, but at 4.35% I wouldn’t mind putting it in on day 10 at all)
My only bummer is I’m not eligible until 4/19, and it’s unclear what the savings promo rate is after 3/31. 4.35 is a very good rate, next quarter is probably closer to 4.0.
I opened just the checking account first, and then the savings account more than 30 days later, since funding was not required until day 45. If everything works out, I should receive the checking bonus before the 4.35% rate expires.
You might want to call and make sure that your savings account is linked to your checking account and thus the funds in savings qualify towards the checking bonus… the terms do state somewhere that the accounts need to be linked, they are if you open both at once but might not be if you open separate.
I did call, and I was told that they were already linked. Funding is due in a few days, and I just completed the deposits yesterday. By next week, I should be able to find out if everything works or not.
I think a reasonable assumption is if you see both in online banking under the same login, and you can do internal transfers between the two, they are linked. But, it is Citi so doesn’t hurt to ask.
Can you provide the link for the $750 or $1500 offer in NY, CT, NJ, DC, VA, MD, CA, or NV?
thanks
Can’t decide if I should do this or the Wells Fargo checking/savings bonus. Any suggestions? I also opened Chase accounts for the $900 bonus in January
Try Citi, and if you have issues, schedule your WF appt. Really doesn’t matter which way you do it. Nobody can predict if offers stay, get better, or get worse.
It says in the fine print that if you open a Citi Savings account at the same time, you can maintain the minimum amount between your checking and savings accounts. And, right now, they’re offering a promotional rate of 4.35% for 3 months, by depositing at least $25K within 10 business days and maintaining that amount. Does anyone know if this can be combined with this $750 checking offer?
This is a good question.
It’s been discussed in the comments. It depends on your zip code. Likely only those in footprint of a branch get to do this, but YMMV. And, Citi branches are only in large metro areas IIRC.
Have you heard of anyone actually getting it done successfully? All the conversations below seem theoretical.
Not sure. There is one DP about doing the deal in branch to get further reassurance.
I just did this deal in branch today and the banker was able to add both promos to my account. It sounded like it could have been done online with both as well. The banker told me they will extend the savings account promotional rate for next month but the rate might be lower. He didn’t know what the new rate will be and will find out tomorrow.
Fine print states that 4.3% promo rate will continue through 6/30/25!
Bonus amount is determined by the balance on the 45th day. So there is no benefit to make the deposit right away, does that sound right?
Correct. Just give yourself some leeway in case the deposit gets delayed, etc.
TaraV
The deposit just needs to show as deposited, and not “available”… as that just means you cannot withdraw until available.
I’m seeing a $750 bonus for 30k deposit. Looks like deposit also only needs to be in there for 45 days. That’s an amazing bonus. Works out to be about 20% APY if my math is right.
Note: If I’ve received a bonus from Citi recently, would I not qualify for this offer? Or is this offer separate from their normal DD offer?
You cannot have had a citi checking account in the last 365 days to qualify for the offer.
Checking and/or savings? or are they separate?
just checking
I think it has to be there for 90 days.
No, just day 45 to day 90.
I’m in zip code 85658 ~ the offer shows up as $750 bonus for $30k deposit.
This one is technically a checking account bonus and not a savings account bonus correct?
I did a checking account bonus and closed the checking account on 8/1/24.
I’m not eligible for this bonus right?
Or can you do it in a savings account only?
It’s a checking account bonus. You would be able to do this offer on 8/2/25.
