Avoiding Fees
No Early Account Termination Fee
As far as we know there is no early account termination fee.
Monthly Fee
The One Deposit checking account comes with a $9.99 monthly fee. Fee is waived by making one deposit each statement period. (According to this comment they really do count any deposit – even a transfer from another Citizens Bank account will trigger this.)
Paper Statements
Paper statements come with a $2 monthly fee. Be sure to opt in for paperless.
Our Verdict
This is an excellent bonus for those in the eligible area. Looks to be fairly easy to meet the direct deposit requirement, very easy to keep fee-free, and comes with $1,000 in credit card funding as well. We’ll add this to our list of the best checking bonuses.
There’s also the Citizen’s Bank $400 Platinum bonus, but that one is probably a worse deal due to the $25 monthly fee. Prior Citizen’s Bank bonuses for the One Deposit account (which is easy to maintain fee-free) have typically been for just $150, and usually in-branch only. This one is a larger bonus, has the convenience of being available online, and the added benefit of credit card funding.
Edit: I see now a Reddit data point indicating the Platinum checking has a grace period for the monthly fee. So that’s probably a better deal if you can manage a $1,000 direct deposit, and you do it quickly to avoid the monthly fees. Just remember, the full $400 will show up on the 1099.

anybody know what the actual promo code was for the $200 bonus back in Sept? Thanks!
I’m looking for that too. I met all the requirements, been making DD and they haven’t given my “bonus”… called yesterday and they act like they never heard of this program.
Just some additional data points:
Opened checking, savings and money market accounts with Citizens, all for $1000 each. Used the following cards and all coded as purchases.
– Chase Freedom Unlimited
– Citi American Airlines Platinum (done twice)
if the charge(on citi aa plat) is pending as “mortgage-financial institution” does that mean it’ll code as cash advance?
No. Did yours post as purchase? (should have)
The link still works and shows a promotion, fine print says this ended 9/30/2018. Will I get the bonus if I open via the link? or is this a YMMV situation? Chuck
Probably not
Thanks for the quick response Chuck, enjoy the weekend
I did this bonus last year when it was only $150 (crap!). An ACH push from Chase counted as a direct deposit, and i set up a recurring $5 monthly transfer from Chase to meet the monthly deposit requirement. It was easy money. Thanks DoC!

I signed up for this a few weeks ago. I immediately emailed them asking to confirm that the $200 off was on my account since I’d read comments about them claiming it was not. Took almost 2 weeks to get a response and received the following. I was a Citizens customer many years ago and found them incompetent and difficult to work with. I see that things haven’t changed.
Dear xxxx,
Thank you for your recent email regarding a new checking account promotion. Please accept our apologies for the delayed response.
Due to the various promotions Citizens Bank offers, we would need additional information to assist you further.
Please specify if the account was opened at the branch, online or at work.
Also, if you recall the requirements of the new account promotion or the promotion code, please include those details.
Keep in mind, the promotion information is listed in your new account packet along with the requirements of the promotion and when the promotion is due to post to the account.
The promotional pay date is usually 90 to 145 days from account opening.
The bonus will be labeled as “Balance Builder Bonus.”

BTW I haven’t received the “new account packet” yet. They claimed they were going to mail my login and password but I got tired of waiting and discovered how to recover my login info but I lost a few days so I wasn’t able to get my pension ACH account change submitted in time, so I won’t hit the DD requirement until September.. They emailed me twice about a signature card I’m supposed to print and mail to them but in the last note they said that they’re mailing it to me with a return envelope so why would I print it and pay postage instead of waiting? I did receive my debit card and PIN.
The signature card should have been in an email.
Your post makes me want to contact them about my own account that I did a legit DD for.
I’m calling them now to verify the bonus is attached to the account. I also did not receive a welcome packet.
My wife had opened an account, got charged $1,000 by Citi, but the $1,000 never showed up in the account! We called on that one and they fixed it, but then got a letter basically saying it was “pending research” and could be taken away. This bank is horrible.
Just got a rep on the phone (21 min wait!).
He said I AM eligible (despite getting the $150 bonus last year), but I’m still within the 90 day window, so he said wait for now. I’ll call if I haven’t gotten it when the 90 days is up.
I finally got my welcome packet in the mail on Monday with the signature card and two checks. When I signed up, they claimed I would get my login id and password in separate mails but they never arrived. I looked up my account and reset my password to gain access. Fortunately the $1000 deposit showed up. However I just realized that I need to make another deposit for August since my direct deposit won’t hit until September (due to not being able to login to the account and not getting account info right away).
Update: it turns out that the deposit requirement is per statement period, and my statement just closed the other day and the initial deposit satisfied that requirement. I sent $5 over from another account but it turns out I didn’t need to do that because my direct deposit on 9/1 would have qualified.
Applied on 7/10 and had to do ID verification. 7/20: finally approved and $1,000 charge hit CSP no problem. Still waiting on mail for online access so I can actually start this one. Frustratingly long process tbh. Hope ACH push works for DD as indicated by DPs
Does zelle count as direct deposit?
Hey, not sure if you got your answer yet but according to DOC’s previous data points for acceptable deposits, pushing from chase does seem to work. Not sure if zelle is equivalent to pushing from chase but thats what I did. Unfortunately its been almost a month since I made the deposit and still didn’t receive anything.
Would anyone advise call citizen to confirm bonus?
Did anyone receive the bonus for this yet?
I opened the end of June and just checked today, still no bonus. I did an actual DD, so no worries there. I’ve been depositing $10 each month so I don’t get dinged with a fee.
Applied on 7/6, application went pending
7/11 – Approved
Credit card used for funding was fraud checked and declined. Is there anyway to re-fund with the same credit card?
If you call they might try it again.
Just checked my cc statement, seems like it went through but possibly because they called me yesterday to verify the account and asking me about the credit funding.
I called them right away cuz i got the same fraud alert, the girl said ohh i remember you, you called yesterday and i was shock she had that good memory xd, i also called chase to lower my CA to 100$ just incase, it went through today and account opened so i assume it coded as purchase.
Forgive me if I’m missing something, but I’m not seeing anything directly on the offer limiting this to the states listed. I saw this offer on NW and it said nothing of the state restrictions. Can anybody verify if it possibly opened up nationwide?
