Our Verdict
I usually do all of these quick coinbase deals and hope that they are worth a lot more in the future. Hasn’t been hugely successful so far, but might as well do it anyway.

I’ve had a Coinbase account for about 4 years. Recently they limited my account for absolutely no reason and then asked me to send them a ridiculous amount of documents. More documents than a bank does. I’ve already verified my account. If you search reddit, other people have also had these same problems. My crypto balance has always been under about $300, so they have no reason to limit my account. I’m not surprised that they’re having financial problems. There are many better crypto exchanges that charge less fees and don’t harass you.
Already down, will likely be another pile of rubbish in 6 weeks.

Also, I thought you are afraid of SIM Swap. Why join?
I have an angle I wanted to try with their debit card (pseudo-MS I suppose). But yes was hesitant about the non FDIC insured cash balance with them so was hoping for some incremental incentive to sign up while debating the whole debit card thing to begin with .
Also, I would hope they have better 2FA than SMS based. Most of mine is at least via Authenticator app (yes not as good as hardware keys) or via a separate locked down Google Voice number if SMS 2FA is only option.

Separate google account for google voice, no recovery email or phone number, 2FA with Authenticator app or physical token plus backup codes as only options. I suppose sim swap is still theoretically possible but harder to do and I don’t think anyone has successfully done a sim swap for google voice yet
Authenticator app and hardware key are both options. I use a yubikey.

You can use an Authenticator app as 2FA for Coinbase
I see 1000 SB or 1700 mypoints. Coinbase has a referral program, but it only gives $10, and you need to trade $100. There’s also a sweepstakes going on now that gives you an entry each time you trade $100 (up to 10 entries). They’ve had some other sweepstakes promos similar to that recently; see their twitter posts.
For 2FA you can use an Authenticator app.
