The Offer
- Costco is running a promo to get $40 Costco Shop Card when you sign up for the $60 basic Goldstar membership tier.
- They are also offering two deals when you sign up for the upgraded $120 Executive membership tier: $40 Shop Card and $60 discount coupon on $200 order at Costco.com.
- Use promo code CJGPNMBR at checkout on Costco and you’ll see $.01 get deducted which confirms the promo is successfully applied (This particular promo code is from Groupon; there are others out there as well for the same deal.)
The Groupon page indicates that this offer is slated to be around through 1/2/25.
Our Verdict
You need to pay for membership with a Visa card and thus opt-in for auto-renewal in order to get these deals. (You can always change that afterward, just be sure to mark yourself a reminder.) Also be sure you see $.01 deducted at checkout to ensure the promo is properly applied. Also note, this deal only works for someone who has not been a Costco member for 18 months.
I’m thinking of finally becoming a Costco member for the first time in my life. I’m unsure whether to do the Executive membership or the basic Goldstar membership. For someone who like shopping online at Costco.com, the executive deal seems like a no-brainer since you’ll get back the $60 from the online coupon discount on a $200 shopping.
I purchased the Gold membership on August 1 and received the $40 digital Shopcard. Then shortly afterwards my account was inexplicably deactivated by Costco. Going in-store didn’t help either. There are several threads on reddit about this groupon related deactivation. Be carefull all!

Purchased the Executive membership on August 1st and received the $40 digital Costco shop card and $60 off $200 online order coupon today on August 23rd. Was beginning to lose hope that I would ever receive it and the turn around time was longer than the two-week period in the terms.
I purchased the executive membership 8/1 using the DOC link (not going through Groupon) the 1 cent discount was shown at checkout. Used my chase card with $20 off over $60, the chase offer has not posted. I got the executive membership for 119.99 and received the emails with the $40 shoppers card and $60 off $200 on 8/8.

Purchased the executive membership deal on August 3. Received $40 digital Costco shop card on August 8. Still waiting for the $60 online discount coupon.

Called Costco again, seems they have followed up on my enquiry and had the $60 discount code noted in my account

No. I’ll probably call customer service about it soon (I’ve held off due to having to call about other issues with costco.com orders, and didn’t want to get flagged as “customer who complains about everything”).

On Aug 2nd I accidentally used a Chase Aeroplan card to sign up because the need to put spend to earn the SUB, not realizing it was a MC!
I discovered the mistake just minutes after paying for the membership. Agh! The promo did attach to the purchase though with the $0.01 discount.
The term seems to say the auto-renewal must be on a Visa, did not say it must be a Visa to pay? I went in the account to immediately change the renewal card to a Visa – hopefully this would still work to receive the $40 shopcard.

Changed to a Visa as the auto renewal card worked. Rec’d the $40 eShopCard today Aug 8th, 6 days from signing up on Aug 2nd. Whew!

Signed up for new Costco, got the $40 card a week later.
