Is there a community consensus around when to close a bank account? I read that good etiquette is 6 months in order to avoid potentially spoiling future deals (for the community as a whole). I want to gather opinions before closing my five bank accounts. Thanks 🙂

No, there is no consensus. It’s a good practice to stay 6 months, because the bank might make it difficult or impossible to open a new account later on. On Early Warning Services (EWS), after 6 months, the account will go from “new account” to “present” status. Capital One, PNC, KeyBank, and BofA are all known to be EWS sensitive for some people. ChexSystems does not have any indicators if an account is opened or closed, but many banks use the number of Chex inquiries as an indicator of risky behavior.

However, if keeping an account 6 months cuts into the next churn because the bank looks at your last account closing date for bonus eligibility, or there is not a no-fee option to downgrade into, it’s not really practical. I almost always wait at least until the next statement period after a bonus posts as to not make it glaringly obvious that I was just in it for the bonus. Grigor

How much do you guys value your hard pulls? Like, how much would a bank bonus have to be, to be worth it in your mind to open?

Gadget 🕵️‍♂️ Bank Bonus Geek 🔗
March 22, 2025 21:11

I can’t say I like getting hard pulls for deposit accounts, but I do so occasionally. I’ve done checking bonuses for as low as $150 with a hard pull.

It’s hard to have a rating scale though on the “value”, as hard pulls are typically not why I would get turned down for a credit card. It’s all the prohibitive churning rules like Chase 5/25 that get ya!

Credit inquiries, or “hard pulls,” account for 10% of your FICO credit score and only have a small, temporary impact on your score.  After about 3 months, it’s nearly nil.

Certainly Experian & Equifax inquiries are more of a turn off than Transunion.

Aren’t some lenders like Citi super sensitive to inquiries in the last 6 months?

Thank you for the answer btw! I’m debating getting Florida Credit Union before I leave the state since it’s a $300 bonus I won’t have access to afterwards, plus credit card funding. Equifax pull which seems less problematic than Experian.

March 22, 2025 22:18

It may depend on what they consider a lot though. I am not chasing credit cards near as hard as bank bonuses. Maybe I am not the one to talk to?

I was approved for the Citi Strata using a 1/24/25 inquiry via recon recently.

Citi used Experian, and I had at least two other EX inquiries in the 6 months prior, and 5 total, not counting Citi.

Here are some that come to mind.

BluPeak (it’s possible that credit card funding is no longer allowed)
Rev
Farmers
OnPath (it’s possible that credit card funding is no longer allowed)
Affinity (this may no longer be available nationwide)

Idahoan,

On Tap is also available nationwide and AFAIK it allows $1K in credit card funding. I was thrown off initially by  William Charles showing $500 in the On Tap post but I’m pretty sure that $1K is still available.

You didn’t mention caring about Chex pulls. However, I’ll proactively let you know that all of the ones that I mentioned pull Chex except for On Tap.

Thanks Eric
As of now I don’t think Chex is an issue for me, I’m new to the bank game.
Hard pull (some of the above you mentioned) is the bigger turn off.

Does no Chex pull mean that there is literally zero downside to opening the account?

I don’t think that any of the ones that I mentioned do a hard credit pull. You wrote “(some of the above you mentioned)”. Which ones are you referring to?

A Chex pull is the main reason that I may not try for an offer if I don’t feel that it provides me enough value. If I know there’s no Chex pull, I pretty much apply to just about all of those offers. Therefore, yes, I agree with those types of offers having near “zero downside”. 😉

Jay 🔗,

On Tap doesn’t pull Chex at all so you are good there. I am unsure if Rev is Chex-sensitive or not as I applied recently and am still waiting to hear back from them.

I don’t think the rest are Chex-sensitive but I am not sure. You are better off always reading through all of the comments in a post before diving in.

They can pull EWS which is sort of like a different version of Chex, but most banks don’t seem to care about as much as long as there’s no derogatoriness.

How do you access a sponsored link on search engines?

Gadget 🕵️‍♂️ Bank Bonus Geek 🔗
March 22, 2025 15:37

Ummm… don’t use adblock? When you use a browser like Chrome, Bing, etc., sometimes the top results will say “Sponsored“. To access them, you just click on them. Kel

How they determine who see what ads is a little bit of a mystery, but obviously they try to target your interests and past browsing history.
