Our Verdict
Last time SECU offered a bonus it was available nationwide with a donation, but terms have specific states listed this time unfortunately. This is an extra $50 and requirements are roughly the same. Worth doing and we will add it to the best bank bonuses.

P1 2/26 received referral notice, applied early morning via public promo link in post, selected Family member, instant approval. Same day enrolled online banking during biz hours. Later contacted bank representative to retrieve Membership # (required for referral program), otherwise you need to visit a branch or wait for your first statement to post. Also confirmed promo attached. Used virtual online meeting and rep also mentioned that stacking referral with promo bonus would work too, I didn’t even ask/solicit it. Afternoon sent P2 referral, they later applied using link from post, instant approval. Opening acct funds deposited 3/3. Chex 1/3, 4/6. Stack should work as mentioned in DPs (YMMV with OOS). I reached out for a referral from someone that was helpful to me and suggest you do the same as it’s an extra $100. GL, stay tuned!
FYI
$100/$100 Referral has been extended to 4/30/2025. So there’s still time to stack it with the promo bonus!
Plus, the $350 checking bonus offer has been extended to 6/30/2025. It’s great when credit unions are proactive.
It appears there is a 24-month lookback for churning the $350 checking bonus. “Members or former members who had a checking account in the last 24 months are not eligible for this offer.”
However, the referral offer only has a 3-month lookback period…
“Members who have closed their SECU membership within three months prior to being referred are not eligible.” That’s mighty generous.
Gets even better with the referral.. “Earn up to $1000 a month through 4/30/25! That’s $1k each month possibility 😊.
Yeah, that was there before. Good luck achieving that goal. I usually get a couple or few when DoC republishes, but there are dry months in between.
When they geo-locked the $350 bonus to just the six states, that was a setback. The referral doesn’t have that restriction though.
I completed the direct deposit requirement January 10, so I should expect bonus March 10?
“SECU will credit one cash bonus of $350 to the primary owner of the new SECU checking account within 60 days of meeting the requirements.”
Pretty much. Maximum of Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
Bank Bonus Bodhisattva
Super easy for myself and P2! For P2- it stacked with my referral.
2/5/25 Opened
2/25/25 Referral Bonus posted to P1 and P2 savings ($100 each)
2/28/25 Two seperate real DDs
3/3/25 $350 Bonus received
For reference we live in VA and I do not think our “went to an approved college in MD” status was examined.
The $350 offer (& $100 referral) are available to residents of MD, DC, DE, PA, VA, & WV, regardless of college status. That note about the college is for students who are out-of-state attending that college.

It is one of the possible conditions to join SECU- https://www.secumd.org/about-us/membership/eligibility/. Based on their website it is not just open to anyone who lives in the above states. However, they seem to not care much about the official eligibility and based on my experience they are really trying to recruit members- a customer service rep even called me simply to see how I was liking the account and if they could do anything else. For my P2, he was easily approved as my family member since I joined first.
Instead of being “creative” with your eligibility, you can opt to donate.
“Don’t see your SECU connection above? Don’t worry. You can still join SECU through a one-time donation to the SECU MD Foundation.“
If they ask, you pay it after getting approved.
Super Easy!
Jan 23 Opened
Feb 7 Deposit from Upwork ~$5
Feb 10 Deposit from Upwork ~$60
Feb 11 Interest Adjustment $350 Checking Promo
Doesn’t get any better than that!
01/22/25 – Opened
01/31/25 – $619 Real DD
02/14/25 – $1005 Real DD
02/17/25 – $350 Bonus
Waiting for referral to post now.
Does anyone know if Fidelity CMA Push works for DD?
Can someone confirm for me that if I do the referral bonus which says $100 for friend and $100 for me does the friend still get the $350 sign up bonus as well? Do they need to do anything special to be sure they get the $350? Thanks for the help.
Yes, it stacks – the friend get’s $100 & the $350 for completion of the requirements. You just register a friend, but they don’t need to do anything else with it.
Then, they signup for the checking account/membership via the $350 promo page.
They just do the requirements for the $350… which are: Open a checking account, enroll in e-statements, and have at least 2 qualifying payroll Direct Deposits within 90 days.
GCS2000
2/4/25 Applied
2/5/25 Denied
Called in, they said they’ll let me know by mail why I got denied. Guess I just have to wait.
I’m fairly new at churning, but I have been opening a lot of bank accounts, I think this is like the 5th I tried? First denial. Could also be because I just got a CSP card on 2/3/25 so maybe that pull was what got me denied?
Adding another data point of getting denied. Pretty sure I didn’t make any donations (live in footprint). I also am a member of the VA American Consumers Council, which I believe was how I qualified for membership.
They took my $10 and denied my app. They won’t tell me why. I do live in one of the eligible states, my Chex is 660+, my credit score is over 800, etc. Based on Reddit comments, this happens a lot and seems like they’re just trying to scam people out of the “donation.”
