Update: Delta has rolled back this policy, they are claiming it was an error.
Delta has updated their terms and conditions to include the following:
Award Travel Ticketing Restrictions
Award Tickets that do not originate or end in the United States or Canada have a three-day advance purchase requirement. This includes routes like Paris (CDG) connecting through New York City (JFK) to Sao Paulo (GRU), or Shanghai (PVG) to/from Tokyo (NRT). No Exceptions. The advanced purchase applies to all Award bookings in the affected markets.
Previously you weren’t able to purchase award tickets within 72 hours of travel in certain countries, but it was possible to by pass this by visiting an airport to get it ticketed. The updated rule now applies to all countries outside of US & Canada and it’s no longer possible to bypass this restriction by visiting an airport. As usual Delta has decided to make this change without giving any notice to loyalty customers. Delta is known for their complete lack of transparency and respect of their loyalty members. They no longer publish an award chart and award prices have continued to rise without any level of restraint.
Hat tip to View From The Wing
Another republican based airline, yep punish those “shit hole countries and their people”
“Another republican based airline”
Leave politics out of this. Especially when you have no clue what you are taling about. 90% of lawyers are democrats. Lawyers write rules. Plus there are just as many Deocratic crooks as Republican Crooks You sound foolish and brainwashed
You’re an idiot.
Georgia just removed a tax break for Delta over them cutting ties with the NRA.
Lol, how did this post turn political? Sheesh.
+1
Does this help Delta prevent members from redeeming on partners or allow elite upgrades to clear or what?
William. If you knew the fraud involved in award tickets, you might have a different tune. Oh wait, airlines should tip off the fraudsters so they can hack and raid people’s accounts before the new rules take effect. Maybe visa or amex should also have a 3 day rule before they contact u to alert u about fraud on your credit card too.
1. Fraud isn’t a uniquely Delta problem all airlines deal with it. Delta has made a business decision that dealing with the fraud isn’t worth the benefit of allowing bookings within 3 days of flights. I’d argue that’s an anti consumer change.
2. Your analogy to Visa/American Express doesn’t make sense. A better analogy would be that maybe Visa/American Express shouldn’t allow purchases to be made in high risk countries. Do you know what they do instead? They put practices in place to reduce fraud in those areas rather than outright banning it.
Good point William… IHG, HILTON, DELTA, THEY KEPT DEVALUING THEIR PROGRAMS.
Jr, your analogy quite honestly is just too, how can I put this, dumb.
I think I have 200 or so Delta miles expiring next month. Those are the only delta miles I’ve ever had and just when I think I should apply for a delta card I find out another negative thing about the program
Are you sure? Delta miles don’t expire.
Good news: Delta miles don’t expire
Watch them make an unannounced change to miles not expiring next month.
Delta miles don’t expire, they just quickly become devalued and worthless.
So they closed a loophole?
People are Smarter then Delta, they will find their way.
