At Yosemite national park, shuttle buses are not operating due to covid. And you need a permit even to enter the park starting May 20th.
I wonder if shuttle buses will be operating at Denali national park, the only option there.

Refund/change won’t work for 5k seating as of end of April I noted while booking Anchorage in August – to book seats you can change/cancel are ~ 9k Denali here we come, if car rental costs don’t kill the deal.

I worked and lived in Alaska for a few years. While I would definitely recommend a car over not, this is still a really good deal. Alternate transportation options in the Anchorage tourist area — the Alaska Railroad is one, followed by the Parks Connection buses. It’s been a few years since I was up there but at the time, generally if one of those was going in one direction at a certain time of day, the other was going in the other direction at that same time. So depending on time of day and direction, you usually always had an option.

Of course, with COVID, people may still be wary of that sort of shared transport.

I purchased one for July anyway, 12k roundtrip from chicago in main cabin. If the car situation doesn’t improve, will cancel. Free cancellations.

Ha! I purchased (higher priced) award tickets the day the Alaska governor eliminated the Covid test requirements a few months ago. $225/week! Hopefully, they’ll have a car for me. The problem with the current DL award sale is that it’s mostly on multi-stop flights. I don’t want to spend 15 hours getting to Alaska.
It’s going to be a weird summer up there. Almost nobody ever travels around Alaska “independently.” They take guided tours. I have no idea why. I’m curious how many independent travellers I will see this year with all these crazy flights to ANC and FAI this summer. Maybe not many, if there are no cars.

As low as 12K roundtrip in Main Cabin from NYC for certain dates. Good deal if it works for you!

Delta seems to offer decent awards on West Coast… meanwhile, on East Coast, MCO-JFK, that’ll be 100K one-way Basic Economy on a random Tuesday 6AM.
