Discover it Miles Now Offering A $100 Referral Bonus + Double Cash Back First Year

Update 7/16/20: Don’t think this bonus ever went away, but it’s now showing an end date of 12/31/20. Hat tip to FM

The Offer

No direct link to offer, referral is required (share and find referrals by clicking here)

  • Discover it Miles is letting current cardholders refer friends to the card, both parties will receive a bonus of $100 (must make at least one purchase within  the first 3 months)

Card Details

  • Earns 1.5% cash back on all purchases, doubled for the first year
  • No annual fee
  • No foreign transaction fee

Our Verdict

The referral bonus also used to be double in the first year, but that is no longer the case. Card also used to come with a $40 WiFi benefit but that has also been removed. This is basically the highest this particular bonus gets. You can also product change this to the Discover it card which offers 5% in rotating categories after the first year. This is by no means the best sign up bonus available, but could be useful for people that can take advantage of 3% in the first year. It’s also as high as the bonus on this particular card gets so could be worth it for some people. I’ll add it to the best credit card bonuses, but it’ll be towards the bottom of the list. As always before applying for this card, read these things everybody should know about Discover cards. Please do not share your referrals in the comments below, that is for discussion of this offer. You can instead share or find referral links by clicking here.

Approval DP:
P2 applied today via referral link with a 737 on TU and 1 inquiry (they like to pull TU in my state)
Utilization on TU was 9%
Approved with a $5000 CL
she was 3/24 and had just paid off her $10k on 0% APR BT offer on her DiscoverIt card.

Denial DP:
Been having discover it card for a year and the cash back match ended, so I wanted to apply for this one just now.
Got rejected instantly, reasons: TOO MANY BANK REVOLVING TRADES OPENED IN THE LAST 24 MONTHS, EXCESSIVE NUMBER OF CREDIT BUREAU INQUIRIES IN THE LAST 24 MONTHS,INSUFFICIENT CREDIT HISTORY IN BANK REVOLVING ACCOUNTS. Called recon number but they said they don’t actually do reconsideration and just repeated the same reasons for denial.

It is kind of strange, I have 8 cards and 7 hard pulls on my file, 750 FICO score on Experian (which they pulled). I don’t think this is too bad. I do know my credit history of 2 years is short, but considering they approved me for discover it one year ago I didn’t think that was gonna be an issue 🙁

Denial DP:

I checked their prequalification checker and it indicated I was prequalified for the Miles card.

So I applied on 7/21/20
$200k income
used a $100 referral link
727 FICO and 0 HP’s on EQ, the bureau they pull most often.

Apparently they pulled EXP instead, which had FICO of 697 and 1 HP from a cellphone company.

DENIED!. Called recon. The recon rep just read the denial reasons and said there was there was nothing they could do.

Reasons cited was an insufficient age of credit (AAoA is almost 9 years), too many cards open (i have 27 cards open), and balances too high (my utilization is currently about 26%).

I certainly didn’t expect to get denied for discover, especially with a so few inquiries and a high income. Maybe Discover is getting more restrictive on utilization with the recession. Thinking of HUCA.

HUCA’d to a different rep. They refused to reconsider the denial, and cited the size of “end of month payments” over the last couple months to other companies’ credit lines as their point of concern.

Possibly they’re looking for churning activity closer, even on non-Discover cards.

Definitely disappointed, first time in years I’ve been denied and also failed recon 🙁

My friend recently referred me to the Discover It Chrome, doing it for bonuses for both of us, don’t like the card much though. It is my 2nd Discover Card. I wonder if it’s possible to close it and open the Miles card since they don’t let me do product change (and it won’t include the matching bonus anyway).

Not a sarcastic question but why choose this over the Discover Cashback card which allows 10% back the first year in the selected categories. This would seem to offset the referral difference of $50 quite quickly in a quarter like one where Paypal is included. I guess for general spending since you get 3% back on everything plus the referral bonus?

I’m not in this category but I think it’s heavy (big emphasis) MS hitters who have the most to gain from the unlimited 3%.

Is there any harm in overpaying taxes using this and getting 3% while paying 1.87% fee and then getting refund?

Not really except you won’t get the refund until after you file your 2020 taxes so at least 6 months from now, likely more.

I used a reader’s code from the referral thread. They denied me due to too many new accounts. A week later, I received a new Discover it miles card in the mail. It’s supposed to replace my regular Discover card. This really sucks, as I’m not getting the bonus for it and I prefer to use the 5% rotating categories.

well, the 3% really racks up. you can have 2 discovers at any time, so keep one 5% card and the 3% too. then next year, after the double cashback posts, cancel this one and open a it NHL card (or It Chrome, or wahtever) and get 10% categories.

Are you implying you can’t open the exact same card you closed?

I don’t think I’m betting the 3%, because I’m not a new cardholder per se. My account number stayed the same, and my existing points were transferred over. The only “bonus” I’m getting out of this is 12 months at 0% APR.

Can you clarify about too many accounts? Did you already have 2 accounts with Discover before you apply? I’m assuming that’s why they converted 1 of your current card to the Miles card.

No, I only ever had 1 Discover card. I opened too many new credit cards overall.

Can one only refer for Discover IT Miles card from another Miles card? I have regular Discover only and when I go to “Refer a friend” I only see the offer for $50 and it’s not clear whether the referred person will be able to open and Discover card from the link or only regular Discover.

Could anyone shed some light on this?

I have two Discover IT cards already. Discover has a limit of two cards.

Does anyone know roughly how long it takes after cancellation of a card to be eligible to apply for a second Discover card?
