Discover has released the 5% categories on the Discover IT card for Q4 2024:
- Amazon.com
- Target and Target.com
Not very useful for those of us with the 5% cards from Amazon and Target. The Target deal can still be useful for buying Target gift cards since those do not earn 5% on the REDcard, but will earn 5% with Discover in Q4. Target usually runs a 10% off deal on their gift cards during the Q4 holiday season.

Hat tip to reader RJ
I have no desire to pay for Prime, so this could be useful in Q4.
Lame, already have the Amazon and target 5%. Any reason to use discover instead?
Amazon is pure cash back. Discover points can be redeemed for giftcards for more value (during sales, ie. extra 5-20%). Target is 5% off but if you have a promo code or discount, the 5% is taken off AFTER the others apply. In a sense, you get less value if you use the RedCard with something else. The same also applies where Discover points are worth more than 5% straight discount.
You used to get 1% cashback for using a non Target payment option (through Target circle membership), but I think they recently got rid of that .
yep, the last “refresh” dumped that perk. But the nice thing about Discover in QR, like last year, is to use on their annual gift card discount since the red card doesn’t get 5% on TGC.
Chase Freedom Q4:
McDonald’s
PayPal
Pet Shops and Vet Services
Select Charities
I saved doing my Estimated Payments until the final quarter of the year, hoping that Chase or Discover would have PP. I’m not left disappointed. 😀
Bingo.
PayPal is the best. I use it in-store at CVS to buy Vanilla Visas. With CFF’s 3x at drugstores, it’s 7x. The only problem is liquidating all those Vanilla Visas (we have 4 CFFs).
Sadly PayPal Bill Pay has removed so many utility companies from their system earlier this year.

The Discover 5% back is good to purchase Target gift cards with when Target puts them on sale for 10% off. Tip: you can use Target gift cards at the in-store CVS pharmacy.
Sometimes Amazon has decent third gift card deals. But yes, meh this quarter.
Target GC is the only thing useful this quarter.
wait until target gives 10% off for target GC. It happens every year and can be a good fit for discover Q4.
RIP discover. Chase may be doing that
could be worth trying to stack this with the pepper app for amazon. up to 12% recently on the app + 5% would be fantastic
Not likely to stack as you either spend on pepper for 12% back or spend directly on Amazon for 5%
Effects of Cap1 buying them 🙁
How is it the effect of a deal that hasn’t happened yet? They’re the same categories as Q4 last year.
