For the longest of times, there was a 4-card rule with Amex whereby each person can only hold four Amex credit cards at a time, including personal cards and business cards. For example, someone holding an Everyday Preferred card, a Blue Cash card, an SPG card, and an SPG business card would not be able to then get approved for the Blue Business Plus card since it would be their fifth card, but they could hold or get approved for a Platinum card, a Green card, or a PRG or BGR card since those are charge cards.
However, for the past year or two, most people are having success – even automatically – being approved for their fifth Amex credit cards, meaning the limit is now five instead of four. Onemileatatime even called Amex when he was denied for his fifth due to the 4-limit, and they were able to submit the application for review and get it approved.
The past few days, I’ve bumped into a couple of people who have had success holding 6 Amex credit cards. Here’s a report from Outandout who has 2 SPG, 3 Hilton, and was approved for Blue Business Plus. And here’s a Reddit report who has Everyday, Delta, Hilton, 2 Blue Business, and Blue Sky.
Truthfully, this isn’t entirely new as Milesperday reported a year ago someone having 6 credit cards: SPG, Hilton, 2 Delta, Simply Plus, and Everyday.
Did the limit go up? It’s possible the Milesperday theory holds true that co-brands like Delta and Hilton cards don’t count. Let us know your experiences in the comments.
Sounds like most success stories beyond 5 are due to Citi conversion. The Reddit report might be an anomaly.

I currently hold 7 Amex-issued credit cards. All active & primary. None as AU.
Amex Every Day (2016)
Amex Platinum Delta Skymiles (2013)
Amex SPG (2017)
Amex Hilton Honors Aspire (2018)
Amex Simply Cash (2016)
Amex Blue for Business (no longer available to new applicants, converted from Amex Delta Gold Business 2 years ago) (2013)
Amex Blue Business Plus (2018)
Also hold 2 charge cards: Amex Platinum (2003), Amex Platinum Business (2009)
Had 5 including converted Citi Hilton. Applied for SPG Biz 3/16.
Got the 5 limit call on 5/19, closed one and got approved.
(also have one charge card open too)
I have had 5 for 18 mos. 2 Platinum, DL Plat & Reserve, SPG
Reviewing the comments below this seems to be ymmv based on the rep you get reviewing the approval.
My DP: I had 5 cards (SPG and Biz, Delta Biz, BBP, BCE). Applied for Hilton Business and immediately got a call from Amex in SLC saying I’m limited to 5 CCs and asking me which card I’d like to close. Closed one, immediately approved.
Automatically approved for 5 cards in January DL Plat, DL Gold, SPG Personal, Blue Biz, BCP. Also had Ameriprise Plat & PRG, but those are charge cards. Applied for SPG Biz, they called me and told me I would be over the limit, but they could close a card & approve me. Cancelled the DL Gold and was approved immediately on the phone.
I had five Amex credit cards (SPG, Blue Cash, Blue for Business, Hilton, Everyday preferred) before the citi to amex hilton conversion. I had two Citi Hilton cards convert to Amex so now I have seven. Is there any risk Amex will force me to close one of my cards?
I have both SPG, Hilton Biz, BB+, and DL Gold, and I was denied for the DL Plat biz recently for reaching the limit of lending products.
I had 4 AMEX credit cards and was then approved for 2 Hilton cards when they launched. 6 credit cards total. Tried for 7 with another Hilton but was denied.
Nice data point, thanks
I have the Wells Fargo propel Amex. Does this count towards the 5 card rule?
