eBay/Paypal Credit Card Double Points Offer [Targeted]

The Offer

The eBay/Paypal credit card sends out bonus offers regularly. Here’s the latest:

  • Get double points on your purchases, up to 2200 bonus points

The standard earnings rate on the card is 3x gas and restaurants, 2x eBay and Paypal, and 1x everywhere else. With this offer those numbers will double.

The Fine Print

  • Valid through February 11
  • Be sure to activate the offer first
  • Please allow up to 2 billing cycles for your Bonus Reward Points to post to your eBay Extras Mastercard account

Our Verdict

It’s odd that I got this offer on one of my eBay credit cards and not the other (yup, I have two – but don’t try it yourself) while most offers typically come to both cards. Apparently this deal is more targeted.

The language sounds that the 2200 limit is on bonus points, meaning you can spend $733 on restaurants/gas and get ~4400 points, half of those being bonus points and half being base earn. Or you can spend $1100 on Paypal and get 4400 points. Or some mixture of those categories.

The restaurants is probably the best deal at 6x (worth 5%). The 6x gas is also good, as is 4x on Paypal purchases.

I just received an email regarding PayPal Extras MasterCard. They claimed in the email that this card is going to be 2% unlimited “cash back” with no minimum redemption requirement (i.e. can be redeemed as low as $0.01). I’ve got approved and checked with customer service earlier. They told me that it was still 3/2/1 reward points structure at the beginning. But they finally confirmed that for me, the reward structure is 2% unlimited cash back.

If this is true, this card is definitely the best 2% cash back card while Fidelity and Citi has minimum redemption requirement (50 and 25 for each). The only disappointment is that this card does not come with sign up bonus.

Spend $1100 on Paypal and get 4400 bonus points? I’m (still) confused.
Also, isn’t 3x points at gas 1 base point plus 2 bonus points? Or as you say above, the 3 points are considered base?
Am I overthinking this? (But there needs to be a good reason to spend on this card!:))
Thanks Chuck!

Oh I see. Did not read it carefully, sorry. I guess it all comes down to how they are using the term “bonus” points.
