(Update 1/8/21: No clawbacks yet, but the issue has been fixed for purchases made a few days ago with credits posting today of only $100. Per reader Brent)
Lots of people have made purchases at Dell since January 1 on their Platinum business card expecting $100 credit, and they ended up getting credited more than $100. E.g. they made a $250 purchase and got $200 credit or they made $150 purchase and get $150 credit.
This is due to the extra $100 Dell credit which was given out last year, making for a total of $200 in Dell credits for the latter half of 2020. This bonus credit was not slated to repeat itself in 2021, meaning there’s really just supposed to be $100 credit for January – June 2021. Yet the credit is posting as if there’s $200 in credits now available ($100 regular + $100 bonus).
People have already called the bank hoping this was an indication that the 2020 offer was renewed in 2021, and they were told the credit is in error. Honestly I’m pretty sure this one would have been discovered regardless. Now it’s just a question whether the bank will claw back the credits. My guess is they well. In any case, it’s good to have a headsup to understand what’s going on. If you want, you can try your luck and hope it doesn’t get clawed back.
This one might be easy for them to fix without clawbacks. They simply don’t allow another $100 credit for the second half of the year.
I’ll be stunned if Amex doesn’t claw this back. They are very aggressive about claw backs, usually without any warning or explanation. Hope for everyone that got it that their luck holds.
Purchase of ~$250 on 1/1. Just checked and my $200 credit is still showing with no offset. Fingers crossed it holds but not optimistic.
Just want to add I made a Dell purchase 1/5 (not expecting a $200 credit) and just received the credit today 1/8 for $100. So Amex must have fixed it. Still got my 10% Amex offer though.
Considering Amex clawed back $10 when two Dell Amex offers stacked, I would never count on keeping these errors from Amex.
“People have already called the bank hoping ……” I guess we have to keep reminding everyone every single day! DONT CALL THE BANK!

Don’t be moron like “TY.”
Meh, it doesn’t matter.
It’s Amex, they’re gonna realize on their own regardless. It’s a huge mistake on their end and the money loss would definitely be noticeable.
Does the dell credit apply to all personal platinum cards? I applied for mine on 11/12/2020. I want to get a monitor, but beforehand want to see if I’m eligible. I don’t see it anywhere in the details of my card.
Business Platinum only
My guess- the $200 Dell promo gets extended for at least 1H 2021. Amex just waiting to announce it for some stupid reason.
Error = clawback
Yeah, I’m with andy, regardless of where you stand re: amex Chuck William Charles ya’ll should not have posted this. I’m pretty much always down with the doctor, but this was the wrong call.
I posted after seeing multiple reports of people who called the bank asking about it and seeing it discussed multiple times on Reddit and other blogs.
I didn’t post yesterday since I wasn’t sure if it was worth putting out there, and it wasn’t yet widely discussed.
Totally respect if others feel differently, but I still don’t really think it matters in the broader scale of Amex’s decision.
I actually don’t blame you guys one bit. You work hard to produce content and have a webpage that offers information. You’re doing, literally, what you’re supposed to be doing.
I’m talking about everyone else. The people who message you to tell you. Or post it online. Or, or, or.
If you get extra money from the bank, why is anyone’s first thought “ooh, let me message a blogger?” Just shut up, sit tight, and wait to see if you win or not. Speaking about it doesn’t benefit anyone one iota, yet people seem to do anything for a hat tip.
But that’s our weird “for the likes” generation.
Chuck Ok, fair enough, if andy’s cool, so am I.
>The people who message you to tell you.
Give me a break. I placed my order first thing on new Years day and got more than the $100 back. Yes I told DOC in a private email. Did I blast it everywhere online? No. I did, however, discretely pass along info to a site that has given a lot to me. If people didn’t tell these guys about things that popped up, you wouldn’t have profited. They can’t be everywhere all the time. On top of it, if you think AMEX wouldn’t notice twice the amount of money being credited back on Dell stuff, then you’re crazy.
We generally don’t post these types of things if they aren’t already being blasted publicly. This was already on multiple sites/forums that American Express monitors. Even if it wasn’t it would be something that American Express would eventually pick up on. If it was a card issuer that wasn’t known for clawbacks you’d have a better case.
Definitely the right call. You’d be ignorant if you think that Amex won’t notice the issue.
