Avoiding Fees
Some states are able to open the Free Checking Account with Extra time (now called Momentum checking), that’s the best option if available. Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan all have the free option. Other states have another free checking offer.
Early Account Termination Fee
This account does not have an early account termination fee
Our Verdict
Fifth Third used to to offer a $300 bonus with no direct deposit or a $500 bonus with a direct deposit but neither of those offers have been seen since 2019. The standard bonus has been $300, so this is an increased offer by $50. We will be adding this to our best bank bonus page.

Post history:
- Update: Some offers now requiring direct deposit, make sure to triple check your offer.
- Update 6/12/20: Deal is back and valid until August 31, 2020. It looks like they are split testing offers though as I’ve seen offers for $50, $150 and $250 depending on the device I used. Make sure you see the $250 offer before applying, the $150 also has a direct deposit requirement whereas the $250 offer does not. You can try using a VPN or clearing cookies to get the $250 offer to show. Hat tip to reader newbie & Ben
- Update 1/4/20: Deal is back and valid until April 30th, 2020. This replaces the $500 deal. A lot of people will prefer this deal as it only requires $500 to be deposited rather than $20,000.
- Update 7/1/19: Deal has been extended until September 30th, 2019
- Update 5/20/19: Deal has been extended until June 30th, 2019. Hat tip to YAR
- Update 1/6/19: Bonus is $250, I’d still recommend waiting for a bonus of $300 instead. There was also a recent $200 + $200 deal as well.
- Update 07/01/18: Bonus has been extended until September 30th, 2018 but reduced to $200. I’d recommend waiting for the bigger $300 bonus to come back.
- Update 04/02/18: Bonus is now $250 instead of $200. Can be opened online (e-mail yourself a coupon and then follow the prompts)
- Update 01/07/18: Bonus is back but is now only $200 instead of $300. Might be worth waiting for a bigger bonus to come along.
Bonus has been increased to $300 and can be opened online again! Hat tip to reader Yaobang. Looks like $300 offer is only showing for some people, try incognito mode or google search for ‘Fifth Third’ or ‘Fifth Third $300’ and see if there is an ad for the offer or look at the comments for more ideas.
How to calculate the 13-month waiting period — Received a $450 offer code today that expires 3/30/24. Terms say that you cannot have owned a Fifth Third checking account that closed within the past 13 months. Account was closed 2/24/23. Does anyone know if the 13 month period is counted by the day so that I could open a new account at the very end of March? Or does it really mean that prior account had to close in January 2023 or earlier if I open a new account in March 2024?
I always calculated from the closure date. In your case, 3/25/2024 should meet the closure threshold requirement. I would open the new acct on 3/29 just in case.
Concur. Your earliest opening date is 3/25.
Thank you!
Did you get the code in mail? Was this a targeted offer by name? Thanks.
There are ValPak mailings that contain codes, not personalized.
Does closing business checking account within last 13 months disqualify me? TIA!
Do not ask for $450 codes in the comments, if people have them and want to share they can offer.
No selling codes either.
I received a $450 code in the mail today and won’t be using it. It expires 3/30. Email me at [email protected] if you want it for free; I’ll edit this comment once it’s taken.
Option to edit is now gone (I have no idea how this site works lol), but, this has been taken ^
You can edit for 10-15 mins
can this $450 code been used by more than one person?
No, it cannot.
Fifth 3rd offered employees at my job $300 SUB for $500 DD.

FYI had issues when opening as it still had the old acct info from the last time I had an account (about 2 yrs earlier), so it prompted me to log in to finish opening the account but the password had expired. The only way to get the password reset online is to either have your prior account number or your prior debit card number. Luckily I still had the card laying around in a box and was able to reset the password online and finish account opening without going in branch. Be sure to order a debit card and keep it just in case you want to open another account in approximately 13-15 months from now and your password expires
Hi Gino, Could you kindly share your Valpak code? Happy holidays, thanks!
Lin Valpak codes are single use. I usually post mine here but there wasn’t one in this month’s.
Thanks for letting me know and always sharing!
I didn’t get one in this month’s Valpak, either. In fact, there was no Chase or Wells Fargo, either.
Am I good to close the account shortly after I get the bonus? I have had it open for about a month now, and I know there are no early account closure fees, but I want to make sure there are no repercussions for closing shortly after getting my bonus.
Should be fine since there’s no penalty — opened mine in Aug and got the bonus quickly.
Zeroed out the balance on 8/27 and they automatically closed it 3mo later on 11/25 — there’s no monthly fees and I didn’t want to contact them
I have a $375 code as follows. Please let others know if you use it.

Used, thank you! Was this from a targeted email?
Shoppinglover I did get it in an email, yes. However, I do not remember if it was sent directly by them or if I entered my email address on the website to request it. Sorry!
Does anyone have an unused $450 Fifth Third Bank checking account promo code? If anyone please could share, I would be really grateful. Thank you in advance!

11/20 – $400 Bonus Posted
It says :Update 11/10/24: Bonus reduced to $300.” Curious on how did you open the account on 11/16 and still get $400 bonus? I was going to help a friend to open it on 11/9 but didn’t get time to do it. Then saw the update on 11/10.
Dan They most likely had the promo code emailed which would still be valid until the expiration date listed in the email.
Oh, I didn’t know the email code will expires on the original offer date. Good point. Thanks.

Opened online with a code I got from Ebay, the code was valid and it didn’t ask me to go in branch or anything, I do live sort of close to a fifth third, but a bit further than 50 miles.
Had a HECK of a time getting the barcode to scan on my ID, both on my S20 FE and my iPhone 16 pro max it had trouble scanning the barcode on my license. And whenever it did scan, my browser where I was doing the application (normal chrome profile with no settings changed or any extensions or anything) wouldn’t update even though it said ID scanned successfully on the phone. I *highly* suggest just doing the whole thing on a mobile browser, chrome on android worked for me.
I had to restart so many times it demanded that I go in branch to open, but thankfully I just tried again from the beginning with a new (mobile) browser and it worked, so if you encounter that error don’t give up.
Anyway time to fund the account (decided against funding during set up) and then do a DD. I ordered a debit card, probably not necessary but maybe I’ll order something with it and it to my really big pile of debit cards for fun.
You can open online normally. The coupon says to go to 53.com/cashbonus…. then enter the offer code.
HOWEVER, if you try online and you get an error online, they make you go in branch. Not sure if they do phone apps, but I doubt it.
If from OOS (out of state), you need to open in branch.
And, yes, transfers from select banks work as a DD. Dan
You can view a sample coupon by going to ebay.com and searching for “fifth third bank”.
OOS meaning you don’t live in any of the states that are listed, right? Do it matter where the ValPak coupon mailer from if I am getting a mailer coupon from eBay that is out of my state? I am in GA.
It shouldn’t. I didn’t use one. Never seen anyone mention they got the wrong code for their state… I’d say it’s highly unlikely. Dan
