Avoiding Fees
- I believe none of the checking accounts options has a monthly fee.
- Ben also notes that no early termination fee appears on the fee schedule
Our Verdict
A $100 to open a checking account appears to be First Tech’s standard offer (#1, #2). Though they have offered some larger, tiered, location specific bonuses in the past. This deal might be a little better than past offers given that the requirements to earn the bonus are quite reasonable and there’s value on the referral side too.
First Tech in my experience offers a nice banking product [and even a good rate for kids savings accounts].
Feel free to share your referrals in this linked post, [with the warning that not all credit unions are keen on the posting of links, so probably safest to receive a private referral if possible].
All the Best!
Hat tip to Gadget
I had a $100 referral bonus post today to my Membership Savings account. Thank you to whoever used my code. Glad it worked!
Description: “Gift Payout Deposit Referral Bonus”
They just needed to add the words Dividend, Present, & Reward in there for maximum awesomeness.
Gadget–could you please send me your referral link? My email address is [email protected].
Thanks!
Can this be churned?
Yes. I have opened account in 2020 and got $700 checking account bonus and closed the account by Dec 2020. I have opened new account in 2023 and got the bonus $350.
Was targeted
William Charles
I signed up under a referral for the $100 Seg membership bonus and just got this!
We’re excited to show you how it pays to bank with us. As a new First Tech member, setting up your direct deposit with Amazon1 is the first way you can earn a bonus.
Direct deposit is the fast and easy way to access your money, and when you establish a recurring direct deposit with us totaling $1,000 or more each month for 120 days2, you’ll also earn a $200 bonus.
Earning is easy–there are no forms to fill and no buttons to click. Just set up your new direct deposit today, and you will be on your way to earning extra cash.
I was targeted too but the fine print says
“Valid for new memberships established between 10.01.21 and 12.31.21.”
I’ll give it a try and hope it works even though I’m sure my membership was opened earlier than 10.01.
Same here. However I won’t have a real DD so I’m not holding my breath. Might be a huge waste of time for 4 months. I wonder why I even received it if I don’t qualify based on the 10-1 sign up time. It’s worded like an existing or new member with a future date attached.
Just a heads up, I got this same email and took a shot on it. I met the requirements and finally got the bonus today. I had to reach out at least 5 times for them to manually apply it though. So I guess the fine print ended up not mattering.

The terms I’m reading say ‘Aggregate new recurring minimum direct deposit amount must total at least $500 per month.”
“At least two recurring minimum direct deposits (an aggregate of at least $500 per month) must be completed within 90 calendar days of the first direct deposit.”
Why is DoC saying direct deposits of $250 are required?
Posted my updated new referral link in DoC’s re-opened referral thread.
(be aware, that the older links don’t seem to work for this promotion anymore)
But to be fair, anyone going for this should either meet all requirements or be aware that in the terms it states that you’re not only supposed to work for one of the employer groups but also be paid by them for a qualifying DD
(if this is really all enforced is anyone’s guess).
Myself, after receiving my original bonus a few months back, stayed with this CU as an active user, mainly since they have a good mobile app for check depositing.
So my referral link should be good for the foreseeable future… 🙂
Update: NM figured it out. Used your code Jay
Since it’s no longer a link, is there a place to enter the referral code during the application process so the offer is applied?
Thanks a lot
Tommy 🙂
To hit the 5k, are you gonna wait outside an Amazon warehouse/FC and lure the workers coming out? Maybe a small placard or QR code linking to your website. While you’re at it, also make them get Redstone, Fairwinds, Discover, Regions, Wings, Albert, Lili, NADEX…
Hey look it’s TB again, always following Gadget around like his shadow. Maybe if TB spent more time pursuing bonuses and referrals they wouldn’t need to spend all their time complaining and harassing people in the comments.
I always thought of TB as
Michelle B. ‘s alter ego, telling Gadget what she really thinks… 😂
Great idea, I’ll be a one-stop-shop! Or, perhaps I will just sit online and wait, just like you do!
But, you forgot Chase?
Thanks for reminding me which ones I missed.
The bonus requirements has been changed that now it required direct deposit from specific employer:
(3) New direct deposits must occur at least once a month from the participant’s SEG employer payroll into First Tech account(s) on which participant is primary account owner. Any direct deposit which does not come from an eligible SEG employer’s payroll does not qualify. Initial, new direct deposit must take place within 60 calendar days of enrollment. Aggregate new recurring minimum direct deposit amount must total at least $500 per month. At least two recurring minimum direct deposits (an aggregate of at least $500 per month) must be completed within 90 calendar days of the first direct deposit.
This essentially made most people ineligible to receive the bonus.
1.) The referral thread is locked and the old referrals dont work anymore.
2.) You can get a new referral by calling them (they tell you via email when you try to get one from their online form), but reading what Daniel Wu posted here, I think this thread should make the update disclaimer way more clear (to avoid sucking in the general churner mob).
Sorry to be interfering with the hustle of the usual suspects as TB already pointed out 😉
P.S.: I’m a happy and very active user of this CU, since their mobile deposits work quite well…
I’ve reopened it, but most people aren’t eligible anyway
There SEGs include huge companies. Amazon, Google, Twitter, Microsoft, HP, Nike, Cisco, Oracle.
this bank is a joke!
how come?
I opened this account last year end of October with a referral link. After having the account for over 30 days, I was able to refer 4 other people and get referral bonus. I hadn’t used this account for about 6 months and I logged in today and saw they charged me $5 inactivity fee. Not just that, but I tried to retrieve my referral link to share and the CSP said I don’t qualify for referral bonus because I don’t work for one of their preferred employers. They also didn’t waive my $5 inactivity fee as a courtesy.
CSR is making their own rules… in ref to SEG. Just the prospective “referred member” needs to work at a SEG. Fees are often negotiable, but sometimes fees aren’t waived if you get the wrong rep or it’s their policy. I’d HUCA! (try again)
I was able to get my referral code by calling them so yeah any current member can refer.
Me too! And the rep tried to pull the SEG exclusion on me for about two seconds, then corrected herself.
Since Amazon is on the list, I envision some resellers trying this…
I just said I needed the refer-a-friend code, and we talked over the terms… I asked her to email the code to me.
The only restriction is that you needed to have to account for 30 days to be able to refer… and in good standing to get the bonus. I am doing some transactions to make sure I am “active”.
Can you please send me your referral link to [email protected]

If anyone is willing to call and get the referral code, let me know. I work for one of the eligible companies.
The link to where you can share your referral goes to a locked comments thread.
The older reference links do not works for me
